if both my grandparents went to stanford, how much will this help my chances? Or is legacy not a big deal these days?

I’d definitely say legacy does not have a lot of weight. I applied this year with a 2330, 11 AP classes with straight A’s, a 35 ACT, all 5’s on my AP tests, good extracurriculars, and both my father and grandfather attended Stanford and was rejected.

If, however, you are also a URM, I would think it’s another story. My school had a girl who was 1/8th American Native who got accepted to Stanford with only a few AP classes and SAT scores under 2000.

To pwnyta: Grandparents aren’t as good of a tipping factor as parents, but it can help a little bit. But, like SCTAK said, being a legacy isn’t as good as other factors.

To SCTAK: How were you rejected? That just seems wrong on Stanford’s part (not only are your stats great, but you would have been a 3rd generation Stanford student).
