Does being a legacy play a role in admissions? My sister is a current BME at Vandy, and is dating the Dean of Engineering's son, My mom went to Vandy, and my Dad worked at Vandy, and donates money. My grades are decent and I have a lot of extracuriculars. Do I have a good chance?

i am fairly certain that there are more requirements to admission...

however, the legacy can only help. i wouldn't mention the dating thing though...that's kinda unnecessary

it will definately help. Your grades, scores and everything still need to be in range, but when it comes down to you or the other guy with the same grades, scores, and a similar essay, they will take you over him. do not slack off; they CAN reject you

I think an essay on the dating would serve you well.--not.

Parental legacy is one thing--i think on the common data set it indicates it isn't considered. but i can't believe that is true. i'll double check my eyes as i read it very quickly.

sibling relationships--i think this may have some weight as i read the annual class info published in the vandy magazine and it appears they try to keep the family intact and they always mention the info about how many siblings are accepted. it still is very hard andgetting harder to get in.

well, it looks like another vandy tradition is in the dustbins of history. in prior common data sets alumni and alumnae relationships were considered. not anymore. last year this was checked as "not considered".
is it really necessary to throw the baby out with the bathwater?

Last August, during the parents welcome on Move-In Day, Dean Shain mentioned the number of siblings in the Class of '09 - something like 72 or 76. I have been following the CDS since my son applied ('01) and they have always indicated that alum relationships, etc. weren't considered; however, I have a hard time believing that. While being a legacy or a sibling won't qualify you as an auto-admit, if the rest of the package is strong, I believe it can certainly be the "tip factor" and seal the deal. Good luck to you!

2vu--are we reading the same common data sets from the vandy website?
up until last year all the cds indicated that alumni/ae relationships were considered. i just double checked.
why would you not favor the alumni relationship?
what message does that send?

these schools are only shooting themselves in the foot--out of 5 kids admitted from my S's high school none chose to matriculate. it wasn't due to money.

musictoad,
Sorry if I'm remembering incorrectly with regard to CDS (middle-age and all); perhaps a change in response is in sync with the higher selectivity that is now evident.
Each year since S was admitted/matriculated, there has been a higher yield than they predicted, resulting in housing shortages for freshmen, etc. Last year S reported that good friends had a freshman placed in their suite due to housing shortage and D's 2nd semester roommate was originally housed in Towers as well. I haven't seen any evidence that Vanderbilt has suffered due to poor admissions decisions, but I respect your point of view.
