Lehigh Admission Advice

My advice is don't listen to anyone posting here. No one posting here is an admissions officer or has any more information than you can get from looking at Lehigh's website. I started looking at CC about one month ago when my son applied ED and was admitted. This website has some value if you're looking for information about the school but is of no value when you ask strangers to "chance" you. Their opinions are worth exactly what you paid for them. My advice is do your own homework and don't be persuaded or dissuaded by any of the self professed experts willing to offer an opinion on how the Lehigh admissions committee will view your application. They may sound like they know what they're talking about but they don't, they just get some perverse pleasure from feeling they have some sort of power.

I believe you are posting this, in a very that sounds demeaning to the website’s purpose. The whole point of ‘chance’ me or any other ‘what do you guys think’ threads is to compare and contrast opinions. Most likely, Admissions Officers would do the same thing and people have different tastes and standards.

And if you are posting this post, then we should not listen to you or take advice from you. Did you really think this post out? Saying don’t listen to people who post here, and then you post here yourself…?

This thread is pretty pointless, all it’d lead to use is an unnecessary argument.

You miss my point. All I’m saying is that unless you know who’s giving his or her opinion on your chances and their qualifications to do so what’s the point? What’s the value of the opinion and if you’re relying on it in some why that could be a huge mistake.

Although no one should rely on what is posted on any web forum, you certainly can find a lot of information, albeit some misguided, on CC.

All members should read posts with a critical eye to decide for themselves whether the information might, or might not, be correct. That said, some posters on the CC site have inside information that they cannot say how they got because they are not official representatives. Official reps must always be vetted by CC administration, and they are noted by a special designation under their names. That doesn’t mean that they are the only ones with intimate knowledge of a particular institution, only that they represent admissions for that school. If you read the Terms of Service, members are restricted from claiming association with universities UNLESS they are willing to go through the process of becoming official representatives.

No one can accurately predict chances, and I think everyone knows this. Most people ask for chances so they can either steel themselves for possible rejection or to feed their dreams.

Aristotle argued that there are three basic ways to support an opinion; using the rhetoric of authority, logic or emotion ([ethos, logos and pathos](http://www.rpi.edu/dept/llc/webclass/web/project1/group4/index.html)).

Readers of CC’s posts should evaluate the advice offered using Aristotle’s thoughts as a guide.

Here are examples of each:

I am a graduate of Lehigh University (as is my husband). My son graduated from high school last year, loved Lehigh but chose ED at Washington University. We would have been thrilled if he attended Lehigh

Although I graduated many years ago from the Arts and Science school, the education I received served me very well. Lehigh has a great reputation with graduate schools and employers alike. I subsequently attended Columbia Business School for an MBA. At first I was intimadated by the Ivy Leagers but that didn’t last long. It was amazing how well prepared I was even with mostly liberal arts courses and a smattering of economics. Lehigh may not be in the top ten rankings but the quality of education is just excellent.

The career center is outstanding and even as an alumni, there is excellent career outreach.

I think this link is pretty persuasive if you are majoring in engineering.

No Ivy league schools in the top ten (and that should make for some interesting conversations at our house during the holidays since I’ve got a son at Penn majoring in EE–and one just admitted to Lehigh also majoring in EE)

As far as the campus itself goes, Bucknell far and away has the more beautiful campus. Lehigh, as mentioned previously, is located on the side of a mountain, and you WILL get a workout walking to and from classes everyday. I don’t recall seeing too many overweight people there, haha!

The rhetoric in [What Does Lehigh Look For? Thoughts on ‘Chances’](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/lehigh-university/763789-thoughts-chances.html) is logos-based with several links to primary sources supporting the advice offered.

Thanks . . . I think. I was not generally taking issue with considering the opinion of others about Lehigh on various topics, e.g., its reputation, whether it’s a “party” school, the beauty of its campus, the condition of dorm rooms, etc. My point was limited to those who opine on a student’s chances of admission based upon their stated qualifications.
