I got a letter last week from someone who read my essay about tennis and really liked it. It wasn't just an average essay (I thought it had potential to be really amazing, but I wasn't sure). She must have been reading my essay for admissions, I was actually really surprised that she would mail an applicant personally (it wasn't just a generic message, at least not most of it).

I am wondering if this is somewhat typical at all. Would I be the only one who got it? Or do they add this seemingly personal touch to many applications? Sorry if I make you feel bad for not getting one.

i don't feel bad :P I got in

i got a handwritten postcard from the admissions person from my area saying that my application materials were impressive

i was wondering the same thing, so does anyone know??

I received a similar email from the admissions counselor who interviewed me, specifically mentioning the microfinance program that i talked about.

Yea I got an email similar to the OP's (although my essay was about gymnastics/dance). I'm wondering if it means anything?

Quite a few colleges will send out more "personalized" notes to people. I've gotten postcards/letters from students, admissions officers, diversity recruitment reps and even alumni from U. Nebraska, U. Arizona, W&M, U. Delaware, etc.

After attending a college fair where I really hit it off with the Haverford rep (who was an alum from the area) he sent me a handwritten letter on his personal stationary just letting me know if I ever wanted to talk about Haverford or the college admissions process to let him know. We've written back and forth a few times. He ended up being disappointed to hear that I wasn't applying to Haverford, but understood my reasons and has been a great help throughout this year.
