^ so is it a "good" deferral letter or "bad"?

Ha. That IS the question! No clue. The last paragraph of my letter says that they are hopeful that I will maintain my interest in attending Michigan...but when you're looking to hedge your bets as an admissions committee, I don't know that this has any meaning, either. The admissions committees are marketing folks, too. NHRK's theory above is just as plausible. It's odd that there would be two different letters unless they are supposing that we would all figure it out by being on CC; seems a bit of a stretch, no?

i am starting to accept my best friends college conspiracy theory but thats never a smart thing. In seeing the credentials of everybody who got the u got something unique letter i am asuming that thats the "good" defferal letter but (insert you supreme being for me god) knows what the admissions are thinking about. ALso i might be trying to be subconsciously optimistic but i hope my instincts are right :)

"If a final decision has not been made on your application prior to completion of your fall semester, please ask your high school counselor to forward your new grades when they becomes available."

I'm still confused about this line. Does that mean if we are deferred, and by some chance they decide to reject/deny us before the semester ends (it already has) then we don't need to send grades? Or does it just mean send our grades as soon as we can after the semester?

i got the same letter as jimmie3....and i got nothing on WA about 7th sem grades

tayltor561- i was wondering about that line too. i think that it is your choice to send your 1st semester grades in or not. if you do, it says that "strong fall semester grades may enhance your status in the deferred pool of applicants." and yes, if they send you a final decision before your semester ends, it means that they dont need your fall grades.

i am probably not going to send in my fall grades since i did really bad, and will most likely have a negative impact on my application. but i am just wondering if they'll automatically assume that i did bad since i didnt send them, or think that i have no more interest.

i heard there are a few different types of deferrals, but i am not sure which one is 'better'

theres one that clearly says your deferred, but doesnt ask for your 7th semester grades

theres one that asks for your 7th semester grades in order to make a decision, but doesnt actually say the word deferred

and ive heard that there are also a few deferrals out there that ask the applicant for some specific things that are holding their decision back. like act/sat scores...

Here is a scanned copy of the deferral letter that I received:

Dear ______:

Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Engineering for Fall 2009. After an individualized and comprehensive evaluation, your application has been deferred for a final decision until a later date. Your application will be re-evaluated on a regular basis, and a final decision will be made based on how your credentials and academic achievements contribute to the composition and quality of this year's freshman applicant pool.

We believe that you have something uniquely valuable to contribute to our campus; however, we expect to receive more than 30,000 applications from first-year applicants for a class of about 5,700. This requires a very selective process to manage our enrollment. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than mid-April, 2009. If a final decision has not been made on your application prior to completion of your fall semester, please ask your high school counselor to forward your new grades when they become available. Strong fall semester grades may enhance your status in the deferred pool of applicants.

Please refer to the website Office of Undergraduate Admissions: FAQs about the Admissions Process for Deferred Students for FAQ's about the admission process and what to do next. We hope your interest in Michigan continues, and you have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful senior year.

Sincerely,

same as me awesome? not rlly but yeah they dont ask us for anything rlly so i think thats good.

i got this exact same letter. but from posts before. they said that our letter (the one specifically using "deferred") is the not good one but the other one needs their grade to maintain in order to admit them. but for us, they just deferred us cuz we're not good enough...2 different explanations..

i dont get it..i received the letter without the word defer, but rather send my fall term grades. i would assume the other is better (stating deferred); i'm not sure why..it just seems that way to me. does anybody know anyone from last year who can give feedback about each categories?

yea...im hoping for UM freshman to help us on this...im sure they havent changed their ways of deferring a lot?
