So, I applied for the Biology program and got admitted to the "Letters and Sciences" rather than Biology. What exactly does this mean? Does it mean that I didn't get into Biology, or am I on a waiting list for it? What steps would one recommend for me in order to successfully be admitted into the Biology program, if I didn't get into it?
Also, is Biology a competitive program, and that's why I didn't get into it?
Thanks

Great question…REALLY late answer. But maybe someone else is checking this out.

Biology is now one of Maryland’s Limited Enrollment Programs. This means that some students who apply to Maryland and indicate Business, Engineering, Journalism, or Biology may not get accepted directly into those programs.

But don’t lose hope! Those students are then placed in Letters and Sciences, if they don’t wish to immediately declare an alternative major. While in Letters and Sciences, students basically take the same exact courses a “declared” major is taking, but they have to prove their abilities through their GPA. After certain prerequisites are complete, they can be admitted to the program. That typically happens during the sophomore year, and those students have no missed a beat. See this website for specific information about Limited Enrollment Program requirements: [University of Maryland - Limited Enrollment Prorgams](http://www.lep.umd.edu)

Biology is NOT competitive. Hit the requirements, which aren’t insurmountable, and you’re in. Steps recommended? Be a good student. That’s all.

Thanks LTSCAdvisor. Do you know what kind of stats a students needs to be admitted as a “Direct Admit” Bio major? My daughter, who is a HS junior, has a fantastic GPA and pretty good SAT score. She is applying to several internships for this summer.

My brother was admitted two years back into bio major with a 3.5 gpa (he did his 9th and 10th outside US) and 2010 sat and 32 act.
