I just noticed today that the letters of evaluation from the teachers are due on January 1st. As all my teachers have gone back to their country, so I cannot go and meet them anymore. I emailed them, but I am not sure whether they will check it or not.

So, am I screwed if they cannot turn in the letters on time? I have finished pretty much everything in the application, and I don't want the letters of recommendations to knock me out. Any suggestions on what I should do?

It’s okay if your teachers turn in their recommendations a little late. MIT is lenient with these pieces of the application that are frequently outside your control.

Just make sure they get the letters in as soon as possible after Jan 1.

Thank you for the reply. I believe the teachers will be back on January 7th, on the day the school reopens. So, if I send the recommendations on January 8th, is it still ok or will it kill their impression on me?

Really, it’s fine – the admissions office mail staff will be sorting through the mail until mid-January or later. Even if your letters were sent on time, they might not make it to your folder until several weeks after the deadline.

If you’re concerned about the speed of the mail, you might consider having the teachers fax your recommendations instead of mailing them.

Thanks so much, I’m really relieved. Yeah, my teachers are going to send the recommendations by fax. Sorry for asking too much. I really want to go to MIT and I am afraid that this might kill my chance.
