Hey everyone,
I’m confused about how letters of recommendation work in Common App. I want to start asking teachers and counselors for letters, but I don’t know all the colleges I am applying to yet. Can I ask even though I don’t know yet? I feel like they are going to send their letters to only one school and then I will need to ask them to continually send it again to multiple other schools… Won’t this be inconvenient? How does this work?
Thanks
My daughter had to provide her high school guidance counselor with a list of the schools that she was applying to and fill out a form for each of the schools with dates, deadlines for application materials, and documents that had to be submitted by the high school to the colleges (for example some schools require only one letter of recommendation, but others require two or three). The high school kept track of what needed to be sent to each school by using the information she provided them.
Have to talked to your guidance counselor about what the process is for your school? And in answer to your question, I think it’s OK to go ahead and ask your teachers for letters of recommendation - your school will keep them on file to send to the schools you eventually end up applying to.
The teachers write a letter and they give it to the Guidance Office. They take care of sending those letters to the colleges. You just have to ask them ASAP to write you the letter. They know what to do with it.
Hey everyone,
One of the schools I am applying to is Northwestern, which says that 1 teacher recommendation is required and 2 teacher recommendations are optional. Is it best to submit one, two or three recommendation letters?
Thanks!
@Cubbybear, I’ve learned as a parent that nothing in the college application world is truly “optional.”
