Letters of Recommendation

How many teacher recommendations does UMCP require? Additionally, is it okay to use postal mail for the recommendations? The admissions website recommends online submission of the recommendation letters directly from the teachers. I think that is an imposition for teachers.

I haven’t looked at an app for awhile, I think I remember Ds having 2 teacher recs, tho.

They can use postal mail, but just be aware that these are MUCH easier to be misplaced at UMD and not recorded. Like everything else with the admissions process, your student should check frequently after finishing the app on UMD’s site that shows required materials and whether or not they have been received…and follow up if anything is missing, like CB’s test scores, recs, transcripts, etc. My more OCD daughter requested hard copies (in sealed envelopes) from everyone, and sent one large envelope with all the recs and her (sealed) transcript all together. She knew when it was mailed and it eliminated the recommenders having to remember to actually mail the things.

Regarding the imposition for teachers, most teachers are used to the online submissions in various forms from colleges. They just cut and paste into the form. Some schools send an email to the teachers with a link to a form to complete.

Thanks Astrophysicsmom. Very helpful, as always.

The admissions department got back to me. They said it is 2 letters total: one from the teacher and one from the guidance counselor.
