@g23nov Called them this morning. It is definitely because we have to do academic advising.
Well can we do academic advising prior to that mass advising session they require everyone to attend ? I’d rather just go down there and have a 1 on 1 with a counselor, in fact I already will be doing this anyways.
I have an appt with a counselor on Wednesday, but I’m not sure if it will count towards the academic advising. I also am meeting with the advisor for a major that I’m switching into after I complete my pre-reqs this semester, so you could call and set up an appt with your major you have already and it doesn’t hurt to ask if you can count it!
@BackNSchool83 No i can’t believe it as well. I remember when I just started community college back in 2014 after moving to Cali and looking at my education plan towards applying for transfer. It’s definitely motivating that all of our hard work has gotten us where we are now
@BackNSchool83 when i visited the campus earlier this week i tried calling my specific school (humanities) while i was there to see if i’d be able to meet with an advisor, but that’s also because i’m out of state and going home for the summer and don’t want to have to fly back to ca just to meet with someone for the day. they told me that new incoming transfers can’t meet with advisors right now but the woman in the office told me that at least for my school they’ll update their homepage sometime this week about when you can start scheduling to meet with advisors so that you’ll be able to register for classes, or if you’re in a situation like me where you can’t meet with someone, there’s an exception form you fill out so that you’ll still be able to register for classes when you’re able to register.
Do you guys think if I drop a class that has nothing to do with my major prerequisites or the IGETC I’ll get my admission rescinded. I want to drop General Chemistry II because it’s a 5 unit class and I can’t get higher than a D probably. I’m a psychology major and I’ve already completed my minimum 60 units, and my prerequisites and the IGETC. I sent a message to my admission counselor one week ago but she hasn’t responded. So do you think I’ll be rescinded or they’ll let it slide? If it matters, I haven’t dropped a class before.
@centennial13 alright here are some things to consider. First off, did you try calling admissions? Literally just keep calling till you get someone on the phone that can answer your question. You’ll probably have better luck than waiting for an email. Second thing to consider is have you tried talking to your chem professor to see if he/she can work with you to get the highest grade possible (I was about to get a D in physics last year so I talked to my professor and since he understood it was my last required class before I transferred he worked with me to get a C. I then went to CC for another year so I kind of wish I failed so I could have retaken the class haha). The third thing to consider is that colleges are reasonably reluctant to rescind an offer meaning there is a good chance if you are not dropping a prereq or an essential gen ed class they will still accept you. This is not law though. You should do some calculations and if a D in the calss will give you less than a 2,0 for the semester defiantly be more adamant about talking to admissions or getting at least a C in the class. I highly suggest you try to get a C though since the term is coming to an end and you do not want all that time and money to go to waste.
@centennial13 if it has nothing to do with your major and you’ve completed everything you need in order to transfer (aka you’re basically taking the chem class just for the sake of taking a class this semester) then you should be okay to drop it. I was going to withdraw from 2 classes this semester that I’m taking just for the sake of staying in school and don’t need them for my major/transfer requirements and called the school and told me that as long as they aren’t necessary for your major, it won’t make a difference. definitely give them a call though if you haven’t heard back from email because I guarantee you’ll get a response from them much quicker!
@centennial13 Hey there! I posted an answer to your question in the main thread! For anyone wondering, this shouldn’t affect his admission status as it didn’t affect mine as long as he has 60+ transferable units still.
What do you guys think is better, taking all classes in your major so you have a really extensive knowledge of it or getting a minor? I’m PSB but thinking about a criminology minor. Hopefully we hear about financial aid this week… Looks like if we get IGETC certified by our CCs that it will count for all the lower division gen ed requirements. For my major just need the upper div writing requirement offered through one of the required internships.
I doubt it but just call admissions
From what I understand you don’t really get anything for doing a minor. Mostly minors are used to pursue personal interest. They’ll just put on your degree that you have a minor (minors aren’t accredited or anything) but when you are applying for jobs it never hurts to have a bit extra. It is up to you if you want to take the extra time, I probably will not (I was considering a minor in German but I don’t even think a minor program is offered).
@Rololo @g23nov @errorthirtyseven thanks guys I called admissions this morning and she said if the class is not part of my major requirements or the IGETC, I am not likely to be rescinded but it is still possible, just less likely. I quadruple checked everything: Gen Chem 2 is not needed for a psychology major, I’ve already taken Gen Chem 1 and Intro to Chem which satisfy the physical science + lab part of the IGETC, and I’ve completed 67 UC transferable units as of today. So I am hoping I will be fine.
Do we have to submit our SIR before we can apply for housing? It’s not allowing me to access the housing application.
Also, is anyone going to the Transfer day this Friday?
@atlashoney yes, you have to SIR first before you can apply for housing. And I’m going.
@atlashoney hey! Where did you find out about transfer day for UCI this friday? I looked on their orientation day page and they said they will contact us in May about making orientation reservations.
@E2DuhJ its not really an orientation its just a “celebration” http://www.admissions.uci.edu/celebrate/
@atlashoney and @centennial13 I will also be there I’ll be wearing a black hat and a shirt that says “flatbush zombies” on the front and “the glorious dead” on the back if you want to introduce yourself
The website says April 13th, don’t they mean May? I’ll totally be there!
Nevermind, they have the correct date on the RSVP page!
Is anyone planning on continuing to work when you transfer to UCI? I’m scared that I won’t be able to dedicate the time needed to my studies with my high intensity job, but at the same time I’ve never not worked so quitting my job is equally terrifying. I wish the aid packages would come out because I am putting myself through school and need to see if it’s even feasible to not work…
