@gbanner I’m planning to work while I take summer classes at UCI but when my program starts in the fall, I highly doubt I’ll have time
I understand you though, I hope the financial aid packages are out by this friday and I too have been working while going to full time school so not working will feel different
@gbanner I will. I currently work in LA but I was transferred from Anaheim, so I already spoke to my supervisor at Anaheim and I can start working there again. But it’ll be two days a week like I work now. Balancing school and work might be hard but I wanna do it so I can manage my time better.
just looking at housing rates, and they are through the roof. i want to live in transfer housing with my own room and bathroom. its $990. It’s so crazy.
So do any of you have a UCI student email ??? I’ve tried to set one up and it’s not working, maybe they don’t activate till after you SIR… Also there is this link http://www.newstudents.uci.edu/ a crap ton of info for us new students and links to everything on the planet we could need… also there is this “transfer pre orientation website” it has lots of info, but also seems like a mini orientation since it asks you questions that you need to progress through to complete it, so get it done now since they might want us to do it in the future if you want to get it out of the way. http://orientation.uci.edu/tpow/Welcome.php the EEE site is useful too https://eee.uci.edu/
@ssm24k Hey when I lived in isla vista by ucsb rent was 700 a month plus utilities to share a room with 2 other people (off campus btw) haha so it could be worse. On campus housing is always going to be way expensive. Usually the better bet is to live off campus but any city with a university is going to have relatively high rent especially the closer you live to campus.
@ssm24k i was looking at that exact housing too, lmao. it is crazy! i was living in walnut before and was paying $1318 for a one bedroom/one bath apartment that was a literal dump and had no utilities or anything included with it, nor did it come furnished. it was such a bad living experience that at this point i really don’t mind shelling out $900 to live in irvine because i don’t think anything could’ve been worse than where i was before. :)) did you happen to already apply for housing? i submitted and paid for mine and it still says apply for housing, but idk if it’s just because that’s what the button permanently says? ):
@g23nov hi! Yea I talked to the housing services at UCI and they said we won’t get housing plan offers until mid June so your portal will say apply for housing no matter what so we just have to sit tight lol.
@BackNSchool83 yea I believe so. My uci net email is active but I SIR’ED to UCI already.
@g23nov@ssm24k I’m actually really pleased with the prices for housing. Irvine is insanely expensive and my partner and I weren’t even considering living there until we saw the grad housing prices. It’s a bargain!
Is anyone over 22 planning to live in the dorms? I just turned 23 and I was thinking it might be a little awkward if everyone around me is younger than me. I was thinking of living in the dorms for the first few years just to meet new people, but I might just live off campus. Does anyone have any advice? Thx!
I wonder if they put you in Junior level dorms… I’m sure there would be at least a few people over the average 20-21 range, plus plenty of transfers go to dorms. You could always keep it to yourself, I’m sure just looking at you that it would be really hard to tell the difference between a 23 year old and a 20-21 year old, no offense, it’s a good thing. Personally, especially if you like the idea of dorm life and having some fun like that, I’d go for it and not even worry about my age, if anything the younger students you do let know you are a few years older than them will respect you and beg you to buy them beer all the time lol. I just remember the dorms that friends of mine lived in while I delivered pizza instead of going to college, how awesome their experience was, I was jealous for sure. That said I’m someone who has issues with drinking, and for me to be in that environment would just lead to me doing poorly in school, plus if it’s a real party dorm you will have to deal with the sounds of a party going on all the time and with living with dorm mates. I’d wager you would possibly do better as a student if you live outside a dorm, but if it’s a low key dorm it would probably be fine. If you tend to keep drinking longer than you planned to, like me, and these are party dorms, then I say go for an apartment. No matter what we are only talking about 2 years here. Oh on a side note, I called UCI today and they said for email that it wont be active till after we SIR, if you already SIR call 949 824 2222 and they should be able to help.
@fuzzypants I’m sure they will match you based on age with a roommate if you’re not looking to get a 1 bedroom by yourself. I’m 24 and have no interest in living near a bunch of 18 year olds, so my partner and I applied for grad/family housing. You may be able to request that as well, however you forfeit guaranteed transfer housing if you go that route because they give priority to all grad and phd students first.
@fuzzypants I’m considering the dorms too and I am also 23. I know how you feel, there is actually a huge differerce between 20 or even 21 year olds and 23 year olds or older. You could always join clubs too to meet friends. There are still going to be young people there but at least you are not forced to live with them and can better weed out people you like. Also are you all confident you will finish in 2 years? I’m pretty convinced it will take me 3.
Hey I found a 2 year plan for transfer students for my major on the department website, seemed totally doable so long as I stay full time at 16 units after the first 12 unit fall 16 quarter, there may be a similar pattern avail for your major. Here is the one for School of Social Ecology http://students.soceco.uci.edu/pages/course-scheduling Even if your department doesn’t have a 2 year plan posted, maybe you can get something from the way that classes are planned out for the 2 year SocEcol programs.
@fuzzypants i have a friend who used to go to uci and she told me one of the housing (i want to say it’s arroyo vista, not 100% sure though) and she chose the transfer housing themed one and said when she was there that she had roommates who were in their late twenties, and i think she was 21-22 at the time. personally myself as someone who is 21 i would actually rather live with somebody older versus someone my own age who parties every day and night… so personally i don’t think it would be awkward at all, i’d say for some it might be more welcomed if you’re older :))
Well like 2 years ago or whenever I was doing most my research for transferring, it felt like a lot of sources were saying CS majours did not typically finish in two years (and that’s at every school). Also I hardly know anyone in any majour who entered as a freshman who graduated in four years. Not to mention I assumed CC was only going to take two years and it took four. Idk I’ve just accepted the fact I’ll be in school for a while >.<
Oh yours says 15 days huh? Mine says this “Your file is complete. We expect to have your financial aid award available shortly. You will receive notification from us once your award information is available.” Man this financial aid info release is almost as fun as waiting for the admissions decision lol.
Has anyone received their acceptance letter or admit package in the mail yet? I was accepted under CSE on the 22nd of April, three weeks ago…I keep checking my mail every day for it and still nothing
