life at rutgers?

Hi! I'm considering Rutgers and just wanted to know about student life. Whatever you can tell me. Just general things I guess like food, where to live, class, and the bus situation. Also, I'm going to engineering, so if anyone could tell me about how that's going, that'd be nice:) Thanks everyone!

Hi there. I’m not a current student at Rutgers but I might be able to help you out.

If you’re planning on getting a food plan (X many meals, etc.), 1 “meal” counts as long as you stay inside the caf, so, if you want to, you can stay in the cafeteria studying all day and eating as much as you want and it still only counts as 1 meal. Towards the more urban parts of the campus there are tons of restaurants and food chains, and there are also the grease trucks with the delicious sandwiches.

As for buses, they usually run on a pretty good schedule since it’s the primary mode of transportation for most students around campus. From what I’ve seen most people don’t drive around campus.

Campuses are all pretty different. I’ve heard that College Ave is where most of the parties and fun stuff happens, but aside from that, the only advice I have is that you should choose your campus based on where you want to live or what activities you want to be involved in, not based on your major.

Hope this helps. And if anybody sees something wrong with my post, please correct me.

Hey I’m a current student here. Ragu, your post was on point, dont worry. I would add that I would suggest you live on busch as an engineering student, as the large majority of your classes will be on busch. this way you can walk to class rather than take the buses (which can be a pain sometimes). try to apply for BEST if you can those dorms are sweet.

the food is pretty good, like ragu said, one swipe lasts as long as you stay in the dining hall and you can eat as much or as little as you like. I suggest getting the minimum required plan. thats what i have and i thought i would run out but i have like 70 meals left with 2 weeks in the semester :P

Each campus has its own merits, but again if youre doing engineering, busch is the place to be

Flyingcrayons, do you know what campus would be best for a math major? Would it be Busch as well?

Sandromo, if you’re a math major, you should definitely consider Busch; that’s where the math department (Hill Center) is located at.

Like they said, the food is okay. The only problem with Busch Dining Hall is that they don’t thoroughly wash the cups, dishes, forks and knives. Sometimes it’s so disgusting that you want to go to another campus to dine. Livingston provides a much wider variety of food as well as clean utencils.

As an engineering major, definitely apply for housing early if you want to live on Busch. Barr Hall is special-interest housing for engineering majors. I lived there last year and really enjoyed being able to live with people in all of my classes. I would recommend Barr, or apply to BEST if the traditional dorm life doesn’t suit you well (You just have to write an essay to apply for BEST, unless they only make the upperclassmen do that).

About the dining halls, in case you’re wondering:

Busch dining hall is really big and has a lot of variety. I can trust the food and they’re good at incorporating ethnic dishes. But, it was so much better last year. It’s still amazing, but not as great as in the past. I’ve only eaten on Busch, so I don’t know too much about the other dining halls yet.

I haven’t been to the new dining hall on Livingston yet, but most of my friends say it’s just as terrible as last year but in a shiny new facility.

I’ve never eaten at Brower on College ave. or Neilson on Cook Douglass, but Brower is supposedly the worst and Neilson seems to be comparable to Busch.

@drexeler. I have never heard anybody say anything bad about Livingston, myself included. Do people really think that?

I currently live on Livingston and I don’t have any problem with it. The new dining hall is really nice and the food is pretty good most of the time. I just get tired of eating dining hall food all the time.

I’ve eaten at Neilson before and the food there is always really good!

With the new dining hall open on Livingston - people say it is really good. My son lived on Livi last year and was always going to Busch to eat. This year he is an RA on Busch and is now going to Livingston to eat. I know the rooms in Lyton tower are pretty small, but that housing arrangement gives you more of a college dorm experience. My son lived in one of the Quad houses and only had 14 kids on his floor. It didn’t give him that typical first year experience. He is now in a dorm with 64 kids on a floor plus himself and says it is amazing. Wishes he would have been in Lyton if he had a do over.

lol yeah i made it a point to visit all of the dining halls at least once. I will rank them in order as: New livingston, busch, neilson, brower. the only reason i rank new livi over everything else is because of the pub, where they serve delicious delicious burgers (kinda like 5 guys). busch and neilson are pretty close in food quality. Stay away from brower… unless you havent eaten in 3 days and brower is by some random chance the only dining hall open, dont eat there.

i have friends that used to live on livi and they hated it, but mostly because the new student center and dining hall werent around. they said it was really creepy and usually gross back then but with the whole renovation project going on its on track to be the nicest campus here!

and yeah math majors should live on busch, the hill center will be your second home in a couple of years ;D

I’m happy to hear from others that Livingston dining commons is actually really good. I must have some picky eaters for friends.

are freshmen on busch mostly engineering majors? i’m transferring to rutgers next semester and i’m a freshman in engineering. i’m trying to decide where i would want to live.

@drexeler- yeah i ate at tillett for orientation. omg the new livi dining hall is so much better. the variety still isnt that great (well im kinda a picky eater), but just the setting is so much nicer. i still like busch the best tho

Busch is a large enough campus where you can’t describe the whole student body, but a lot of freshman housing is reserved for engineering majors (Barr, Mattia, BEST). I would recommend living on Busch since a lot of your classes would most likely be there; it’s really convenient. With other engineering majors living around you, it’s nice to make friends with them and study :)

Tillett was terrible! I remember eating there for orientation. I’ve had takeout on Livi last year, and it was impressive compared to Busch. I’m not sure whether Livi’s takeout is the same this year, but I hope that it didn’t change or get worse!

I like Busch Dining Hall. Maybe it’s just that I eat there a lot, but it seems like the variety got smaller this year.

yeah tillett might have been worse than brower, but its pretty close. i dont see a new dining hall opening on college ave anytime soon tho :P

and yeah idk about takeout last year, but the livi take-out this year is a lot better than the busch takeout on certain days, and on other days busch wins.

i like busch the best too the variety might not be amazing, especially at lunchtime but its actually better than livi imo… although livi is just a nice place to be since its new and stuff
