Likely Letter Financial Aid Mystery

I didn't get any email about financial aid (or any contact from Dartmouth for that matter) and not even an interivew. I'd assumed I got rejected until I got the likely letter, which I almost threw out assuming it was one of those typical encouragement letters. (I didn't know there were such thing as likely letter until this year).

hmm...i got the FA email today, too. arg, now my hopes are up :/

Got financial aid email today. A week after I got likely.

Haven't had any contact with Dartmouth since submitting app....no interview, no financial aid email, no letter...and unlike xforamenxmagnum, I doubt I'll receive any likely since I'm more of the average, boardline applicant =[ I'm assuming I got rejected...

I'm also assuming I got rejected, Dartmouth has been eerily quiet.
wind whistles, crickets chirp, yadda yadda

They have no reason to contact you unless something is wrong...

Try to relax and enjoy yourself for these next 2-3 weeks.

patience grasshoppers

I got an FA email this morning, which seems to be pretty late.
I'm guessing that I must be one of the border-border-line candidates and that this doesn't mean anything because they must be deliberating to the end? And then the FA office just clarifies for all of the people that they're still deliberating on?

I don't know what to make of it.

Thericwu - I think you hit the nail on the head. My child got an email from one of his top reach schools asking for missing financial aid info over the weekend.

There is no way, NO WAY, that they are sending out that email to potentially thousands of applicants whose applications have been denied and but whose financial aid applications are not complete.

What in the world would be the point, and it would be downright cruel to make students/parents provide information to a school who was already rejected the applicant.

On the other hand, my son simply may have made the penultimate cut, and could get cut on final review.

It is without doubt a good sign, but you have to sit tight.

PS First child three years ago got financial aid inquiries late in the game, and got into all three schools. But it is NOT a guarantee, I have definitely read in previous message boards that some kids get turned down.

it definitely could be an indication. What exactly are the asking for?
Because it might be as Thericwu suggests that these kids are borderline candidates who have got a mistake in their financial aid application though. So it could mean that those borderline candidates who have filled it out correctly may not receive this email?

I got an unofficial financial aid letter yesterday, and I'm pretty happy with the outcome, even if it is an estimate.
Full tuition (yay for lower income!) with about 8500K extra. My parents will contribute about 4k and I'll do 2k of work study.

Am I the only person that got a FA email but no likely?

cheer up, guys! I got neither a likely nor a FA letter. :) I think getting one of those is better than getting none...

nope...i got the fa email about 5 days ago and no likely

I hope Dartmoose is right and no Email means you got it all right the first time as far as sending in FA stuff. No email no likely, however have received FA offers from other schools already accepted to so I figured all our stuff was in order since I sent it in through IDOC.

Actually, any school who receives federal funds (pell, stafford loans, federal work study) are required to audit a random 30% of the FA applications. So yes, it is quite possible that you could receive a request for additional FA information and not get an acceptance letter (although in my gut I do beleive that this is a good sign. Crossing fingers for your child)

where is my mailman!!!!! its 4!

sybbie:

Interesting note.

However, the FA offices could certainly get the 30% by using the completed applications, rather than making rejected candidates complete forms.

Anyway, rather than torture myself with reading tea leaves, I might as well just relax and let it play out.

Thanks for keeping your fingers crossed!

then it wouldn't be random though, would it?

I see no reason to assume that you are a "borderline" candidate. They can't consider everyone simultaneously, for heaven's sake!!

It is more likely that admissions sends results over to FA, and FA goes through the FA aplications and sends out inquiries IF there is a question! And again, they can't look at all the FA applications simultaneously, so this "borderline" stuff is silly.

MOST accepted applicants do not get likelies, and MOST accepted applicants are obviously not "borderline."
