Likely letter then Fin-aid Waitlist!!

I received a likely letter, and then I got into a financial aid wait list. How did it happen? Does anybody know how to get off financial aid wait lists? :(

Well, it shows that admissions and fin aid are separate at that school. I would call Admissions and let them know how thrilled you were to get the likely letter and that you do want to go there, but that you are on the fin aid waitlest, and if there is anything the admissions officer can do to help you. Is this a school that claims to be X% need blind in admissions? Because if it is, with a likely letter, you should not be in that bottom X%; it makes no sense, unless that likely letter is sent to just about everybody.

Are you absolutely certain that you sent **all of your financial aid ** information in on time?

Ha, ha, Sybbie, you know your stuff. Forgot about that one. Yes, at some schools, no tickie, no laundry and if not on time you get in the wait list line. If you need the money to attend, that is particularly the case. Such schools make it pretty clear that if you miss ANY deadline, you aren’t getting access to some pots of case, like university grant money. It’s a very strict policy, and if you miss or it looks like you are going to miss, you gotta be right there , working with the university officials and making sure that you don’t lose access to some funds, or that’s it.

I didn’t miss the deadline, and I had sent all of my financial aid info. in on time. Plus it’s need blind admissions. My friends guess that it could be because of lack of demonstrated interest. i.e. the only email I wrote to the school is to send some financial documentations. The surprising thing though is a single person had signed my likely letter and my fin-aid wait list letter. It’s my top choice.
Could it be because of something I DID or DIDN’T do? Any advises?

Did you receive a “likely” letter recently? Typically at this time of year it is accept, reject, waitlist, perhaps if you start at the beginning - when did you get your “likely” letter, did you ever get an actual accept, defer, reject or waitlist from this school? I guess the bottom line is - are you actually accepted to this college right now?

Do bring the paperwork to your GC at school and see if a call can’t be made to that person who signed your liely letter and shed some light to all of this. It could be a mistake. They do happen, you know. Something doesn’t smell right when there is a fin aid waitlist at a supposedly need blind school anyways. Maybe another need blind school like GW was? Do have your GC check into this and let them know this is your top choice. ALso let the GC know the school is supposed to be need blind in admissions and bring some proof–the claim on their website, for instance for the counselor to have in hand. IF the GC can’t, won’t help, talk to a teacher you know well, or the principals. Something is not right here.

Could this be an international student? Would they be treated differently?

are you an international student?

Need blind is an admissions process; all it means that your applying for financial aid or needing aid will not be used against you in the admissions process?

Does the school guarantee to met 100% demonstrated need for the students it admits?

4What did the school require to consider you for financial aid; FAFSA, CSS profile, non-custodial profile, business and farm supplement, verification forms, IRS transcript, Data Retrevial Tool?

What college is this?

When did you submit all of your required documentation (if you submitted close to the deadline), they may have been out of $$ by the time it came to package you for aid. Find out from the school, what exactly it means to be placed on the wait list and how long will you have to wait for funding

If the OP has never actually been accepted it is entirely possible that he/she could be waitlisted for finaid as there is no reason to put a package together for a student that isn’t actually accepted - finaid is “waiting”…but unless the OP clarifies if they have been accepted and answers some of sybbie’s question there really isn’t anything to comment.

Need blind has NOTHING to do with your financial aid. That simply means that the schools did not use your financial need when considering your ADMISSIONS.

Were you actually accepted to this university…or did you just get a likely letter.

Does this school guarantee to meet full need for all accepted students?

Did you get an actual letter of acceptance?

Have you checked your student portal for financial aid information? Are you missing anything?

Were you selected for FAFSA verification?

What documents did the school request? Was this part of a verification process. When were those sent?

Hi everyone thanks for your replies. Here are the facts:

I received the likely letter in mid-March.

I got an actual acceptance letter by the time other students did.

I am an international student.

I am not missing any financial document nor did I miss any deadline; the fin-aid office told me so. Although, I did submit it very close to the deadline.

There is no mistake. My GC asked and was assured that I am on a fin-aid waitlist.

The college guarantees to meet full financial aid.

This school is very prestigious and it is also my top choice. It, surprisingly, fits extremely very well with my imaginative dream school. I had settled comfortably after the likely letter, but this fin-aid waitlist has put me on my toes. Any ideas…

one of the challenges with applying as an international student is that most schools have very limited funded and are only able to fund a few students (exceptions are probably HYP).

so basically it seems that you have an admit /deny; the college academically admitted you but at this time is not providing $$ for you attend. If you do not have finding or the means to pay, you cannot get your visa to study in the us. You do have any other affordable options?

The college likely does not extend its financial aid guarantee to international students. That you are on a fin aid wait list belies that statement and it’s probably a category only international students find themselves in. You are accepted but there is not enough money left in the pot to fund you. If you called and said you could come up with the money, you’d probably clear the list and be accepted, but since you cannot, you have to wait and see if funds come through when other kids make their decisions and if enough turn down the school’s offers to return money to the pot that can go to you and others in your situation.

It makes no sense to accept you without the money, because without a student visa showing that you have enough to come here, it’s a no go. So you’d have to turn down the offer without aid from the school.

So there you are.
