10iswarrior - I usually refuse to believe these “rumors” but there are some that get calls and aren’t one of those, correct? Also, pardon my ignorance but what is a Rodman scholar?

If I were an Echols scholar I’d give Virginia my deposit the second I heard. I’m not really a fan of core requirements =P

Thank you, ptlitcacmitm, for bringing your stats back down to earth with the rest of us college applicants (Not hating on those who have THE stats though haha)

I’m not really sure what you’re asking. Some people who get the likely letter also get a phone call, and they are very likely to be an Echols/Rodman Scholar from my experience. This is from my experience though, and simply because I know several people who got the phone call and are now Echols scholars at UVA (my county’s schools normally send top students to UVA).

A Rodman Scholar is essentially an Echols Scholar for the Engineering School, I believe. I looked it up briefly the other day, but I applied to the College so I don’t really know for sure.

Echols Scholars are basically honors students at UVA who get priority in choosing classes, have their own dorms, and have little distribution requirements (I believe they have 3 requirements or something). If you want to learn more I suggest looking it up on UVA’s website.

I received a likely letter and then got the phone call from UVA. However, I never actually talked to them and my dad answered saying I wasn’t home which I wasn’t. They tried again a few days letter - again not home so he gave them my cell. They never called my cell. I wish there was a way I could call THEM but oh well.

Point being, I did not know the intent of the call. I know Dean J’s blog says its just a call but I’m a little skeptical. I was asking if there was anyone that got a likely letter AND a call that didn’t get into Echols. Echols would be a dream come true, for sure.

How and when would you find out if you are an Echols Scholar? I got a LL. Now weighing UVA OOS vs UNC CH OOS vs some large merit awards elsewhere. UNC is offering some special extras. But Echols could do it for me if parents can swallow OOS tuition. Love the academic freedom Echols offers.

At some colleges, some admission staff call a few students in their geographic area, while other admission staff do not. Some colleges assign students to call, some do not. Some colleges assign alums to call, some do not. My point is, don’t read anything into the lack of a phone call.

DaVinci - I’m in the same situation as you but I don’t think I got any “extras” from UNC. What do you mean by those? As to how/when you hear about Echols - it appears based on past year’s blog entries from Dean J that you hear in mid-late march either by mail if they get them done in time or by email if they don’t. Hope that helps.

UNC sent email asking me to prioritize a few choices like $ for summer study abroad or summer research, or guaranteed admission to business or journalism, or 1st choice of freshman seminar; or some other research thing, but I don’t know for sure which (if any) I’ll be offered; I just assumed they’d offer one of them since they asked which I’d like most. It’s nice but in the end it will probably come down to which college has the best programs in my majors/minors for the price. Sadly this may not be either UNC or UVA! Unless I can become instate!

Last year, at least in our case, Echols notification was received by email shortly after acceptance decisions were posted. There was no phone call or any other indication that it was coming. It was a very nice surprise.

Congrats DaVinci. I was hoping for assured admission into business but that’s why I’m hoping UVA will sweep me off my feet with Echols. We’ll see.

I just looked up Echols Scholars for more information. There is not a separate application - everyone is automatically considered. They notify students about the same time as regular admissions decisions. There is no scholarship attached to it. They receive priority on course registration and reduced required classes within subject areas. The engineering equivalent is Rodman. There also is a special advising program.

Echols and Rodman live together in a couple of the nicest dorms for the 1st year.

It may be different next year, but in year’s past, Echols students don’t live in the “nicest” dorms. This year they are in Webb and Lyle (sp?) on Alderman Rd. Webb will be torn down this summer as part of the dorm replacement program. It is possible that the Echols students will be assigned to one of the newly constructed dorms next year.

I also wanted to point out another aspect of Echols for prospective McIntire students. Echols students are still required to complete the McIntire prerequisite courses. These are essentially the same as the core requirements that Echols students in the College get to skip. So basically you lose a key benefit of Echols if you are planning to go to McIntire.
