has anyone gotten a "likely" letter?

Princeton does this?

well it says that on the application

does anyone know if this is true?

I thought they didn't send likeley letters...but they might if you are super-awesome. Likely letters are only RD though, to get the superstar applicants to start thinking about the college that sends them early and hopefully pick that college.

Likely letters are for heavily recruited athletes only. Because Princeton does not offer scholarships, in order to compete with other schools that do offer scholarships Princeton lets these superstar athletes know that it is "likely" that they will get in as a way to entice them to come to Princeton. It makes it easier for an athlete to turn down a full ride to Stanford if they know that they will be getting into Princeton. They do not send them out to regular applicants...

This is from Princeton's website...I guess I was wrong...some candidates who aren't athletes may get a likely letter, but it seems that that is rare...

"Admissions Offices at each Ivy school may offer some athletic and other candidates a "likely" letter, which has the effect of a formal letter of admission provided the candidate continues to have a satisfactory secondary school experience. Coaches may initiate the requests for these letters, but only the office of admission can issue a "likely" letter. "

that's under "early evaluation" procedure....the whole point of a likely letter was at first to give athelets a heads-up for their acceptance so that money-giving offers from other schools won't look as great. since ivies don't (atleast not openly) give money to anyone, the likely letters are supposed to counter other schools scholarships. this obviously applies to non-athletes too. but it's trivial for ED because ED is (1) binding to one college anyway and (2) you don't know about other scholarship offers from schools other than the ED one because you haven't applied. Likely letters pretty much only come around in RD, from what I understand (or atleast that would make sense).

Princeton essentially INVENTED the "likely letter.

While originally "likelies" were only aimed at jocks in order to avoid losing them to the "bird in the hand" offer from an athletic scholarship granting school, their use has now progressed far beyond the original targets, and scores - if not hundreds - of URMs, high SAT scorers and other desirables get them.

You see many likely letters in the late fall - depending on which sports are offering a "letter of commitment" at that time.

The bulk of the "non-jock likelies" come between January and April.

A guy from my area got a letter from Princeton for an "official visit". We live in Texas, and they sent him a plane ticket to go.

He is not an athlete, URM, or legacy.

He's just amazingly brilliant.

He wasn't considering Princeton before, but will now apply RD.

Will Princeton try to "reserve" a spot for him since we go to the same place? I mean, they already spent money to fly him up there...

jealous of the guy
