likely letter?

i'm oos and got one

i'm out of state also and got one. I really really really hope that this is just a preliminary acceptance letter in disguise. but anyway this makes the wait until january 15 much easier.

honestly though, i was thoroughly surprised when i got this letter in the mail. I got a 30 ACT (32 E, 31 M, 31 R, 27 S) and I am in the top 16% of my class. My essays were the strongest part of my application, and when my teachers read them they were all in awe. (No exadderations).

btw. i think that being a black first-generation male helps also.

carolinahell, no offense, but black first-gen male is the strongest part of ur application...lol
i got an 1420/1600, top 10% of the class, instate, and **** load of services and i didnt get a letter.

got one OOS today!!! i'm so excited :D

yeah, i was pretty nervous after reading all of these posts. I got a 2120/2400. 6th in my class of 300 with a 102.6 average...
but wthsat, thanks, you gave me a glimpse of hope.

lol. just let u know, the average sat for unc in state is like 1800s i think..

thank you alizarda for giving me hope. I'm so bummed I haven't gotten one yet. Especially when my friends are getting their ED letters back. But I'm glad they are still sending them out. Perhaps there is hope.
2190 SAT, 4.0 uw, 4.75/5 weighted, 22/500...

None has arrive here for S, OOS applicant, accepted EA at GU-SFS but hoping for a Robertson invite.

I'm in-state and just received the letter two days ago saying thanking me for my "distinguished application", etc. and inviting me to campus, but I've heard of students being deferred even after receiving likely letters. Do you think there's any chance of my being deferred or rejected anyway? As well, why were there two different letters? It would be such a let down to be denied after the letter, and my family and I got so excited...

wthsat

The average in state SAT for the current freshman class was 1926 which of course includes recruited athletes, Carolina Covenant etc.

rfwcphs1

PM me and let me know where you go to high school.

thanks

I had a friend last year who claimed to have gotten a likely letter and then deferred EA and ultimately rejected. If this in fact, was the case, it's very rare and probably poor practice to send likely letters to people who would not be accepted. If you got a likely letter, the chances of you getting in are probably around 99% (or higher), if not 100%.

eadad, where do you get stats on IN STATE only? Everything I see published is for the incoming Freshman Class in total. I would love to see the differences between the two, if any. thanks.

search unc site for this.

Office of Institutional Research and Assessment - First-Time Freshman Class Profile, Fall 2008

do regular applicants receive likely letters as well?

Thanks so much, eadad! I looked at the data and was actually surprised.......68% of OOS have scores in the 1300s or ABOVE while 52% of In state have scores in the 1300s or above. Great chart. The scores differences for the individual components, for those who have not seen it, are: (in state), (out of state), (total average)

Average SAT Critical Reading (639), (663), (643)
Average SAT Math (654), (678), (658)
Average SAT Total (Critical Reading + Math): (1293), (1341), (1301)
Average SAT Writing (633), (664), (638)

Not to burst your bubble but please don't forget that the OOS pool is smaller and includes ALL the OOS recruited athletes and URMs. My point in pointing this out is that because of the smaller pool, the impact of the presumably lower SATs is statistically more significant than it is for instate. What this means is that the "typical" non-URM, non-recruited athlete in reality has a higher profile than what you are looking at.

Number and statistics can say many things, you need to look at all the variables to understand what they really mean.

in oos and i got one a while ago, first week of dec.
i didn't even take it seriously until i saw this thread, i thought it was just generic and sent to everyone to make them feel good!!

what does it really mean??

i think it means you're almost assured of getting in. I got one today :)

i reeeaaaly want one!
i thought unc would be a safe-ish match oos for me (7/142; 94.5uw; 21 honors/aps; 1510; 2270) , but now my 2 friends (all a fair bit lower, but urms) have them and i dont... : /
