im kind of confused about the likely letter thing. what does the letter say?

Dear XXXX:
As an outstanding student from North Carolina, you might be interested to learn that Senior Aisha Saad from Cary, N.C. just won a Rhodes Scholarship.

not a likely letter. this is just a letter explaining all of the boundless opportunities you'll have at carolina, etc. etc.
also i know her brother :)

you know, actually, when i read it again, i changed my mind. i kind of skimmed the email the first time and missed the phrase that called you an "outstanding" N.C. student and the line "should you choose to join our community..."

the more i read it, i'd say that usually words designating you an "outstanding student" signify a likely letter.

Im out of state and got a letter very similar to it today.

its from Farmer, not the undergraduate admissions department like the others have been, saying:

"I write to thank you for your distinguished application to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Although our admissions committee will not complete its work until January, we have already been impressed by your achievements and your potential."

Not necessarily, they may have different letters for in state and OOS students.

This one phrase
Should you choose to join our community, you may look forward to an exciting future that will extend well beyond your four years on our campus.
leads me to believe it is a bit more than a feel good, we think you're a great kid letter. It's really difficult (and dangerous) to try to read anything into any letters but that one phrase says a lot more to me than "have a nice holiday."

so are we in aggreance that
"I write to thank you for your distinguished application to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Although our admissions committee will not complete its work until January, we have already been impressed by your achievements and your potential."

Ahh, I just got one as well. I had to come here and check to make sure it was the "right" letter before I could even believe it!
So what does this mean, exactly? I am pretty much accepted? Is it any indication of the honors program?
I'm way more excited than I probably should be.

In my opinion, I think that they sent them out around the December 15 date, when most of the other colleges will be letting their early action applicants know that they have been accepted and so we don't hastily put in that deposit somewhere else

so i didn't get one of these letters and was wondering if they're solely for in state or if a bunch of oos got them too???
I find it surprising that colleges would distribute these letters for any other reason than to keep unc in people's minds who applied to other schools early.
