Does UVa give likely letters ( dont that i would get one)...i was just wondering

Yes, typically to high stat kids in consideration for Echols/Rodman status.

I got a likely letter but no echols. So i wonder what would happen if i wrote back to adcoms and say "i will not go to uva, unless i'm an echol scholar."

;)

I wouldn't have gone if I hadn't gotten Echols. Hell, my likely letter came late and I was P1SSED. Arrogant little sh1t, I was.

my likely letter came late

Define late!

I'm not a fan of the term "likely letter", but we will send letters to students who impress us at different times in our reading season. The letters aren't a reflection of the Echols/Rodman selection process.

"Adcom"...yet another word that I find problematic. If you'd like to write to UVA, write to a Dean.

cav, where would you have gone if UVa didn't give you echols status? Georgetown?

Dean J, my letter came in early March. Many kids on CC had been receiving theirs since mid february, so I was getting a bit anxious. I don't see the "likely" letters as necessary, but when every school is doing it, UVA might as well do it. It's certainly nice to get something like that ahead of time. BTW, Dean J, a friend of mine had his mother (who went to UVA) call the alumni office when he received a likely letter and they told her that letters went to people who were in consideration for Echols/Rodman. He ended up being named a Rodman Scholar, but chose to go to a better school. The same was echoed on the old CC board.

Untilted, if I hadn't chosen UVA, I would have ended up at Chicago, Rice or Georgetown. I'm still not sure which I would have picked. In fact, I didn't even send my deposit in until april 30.

I didn't get mine until a month after the send date.. in fact ANY mail I got from UVa that was sent overseas was a month later.. while other schools Fed-Exed it over, UPS'ed it over, or got it to me within a week by regular mail. I was really annoyed at UVA when I was waiting for mail. Heck, I didn't even get my bills until a week later than everyone else, and my billing address is in New York!

What exactly is a likely letter? I have never heard of this term before.

They're letters sent by some schools to highly qualified applicants at some point in february or early march. They usually stop just short of telling the applicant that he's in.

This is one of our frustrations as well. The Director of International Admission continues to fight for upgraded shipping. I don't fully understand why our mailing service can't do this (though, obviously money is part of the reason).

nod I thought so. I hope he's successful, as a small dirty envelope a month late doesn't quite compare to a big express mail package. Or maybe this should be some homework for students going overseas.. deliver mail. =P
