Likely Letters

Dartmouth sends likely letters regardless of athleticism.

aaaaa, the Bucknell letter you got was a likely letter, my friend got one a few days ago too.

and not all the letters are likely letters. I mean, I got one from NYU that says that I'm exactly "the type of candidate that would get into NYU" or something like that...this was before I even applied. I think they routinely send those out according to PSAT scores. likely letters say something like "I feel confident that you will be awarded acceptance in April and see no reason for you to have to wait until then to know about it." Like someone said earlier, they're trying to woo their strongest candidates away from other schools.

beautifuldisaster,

I got the mcmullen thing for the eng school. Lemme see if I can remember my stats. I don't remember what my GPA was but I came from a competitive public H.S. I think my SAT was a 1500 and I had perfect SAT IIs. I was in a bio research program and I was pretty good at Model UN.

A good friend of mine (who is a year older) had very similar stats as me and nearly the same ECs. He got admitted and attended to Cornell Eng in 2000, and is now doing his PhD at Berkeley. He was a recipient of the CPRS but not the McMullen thing. If I remember correctly, there were probably 40 or so McMullen scholars in our class.

My housemate and good friend is a McMullen scholar for Arts and Sciences. I dont know what his grades or SAT were like, but he did Science Olympiad and he actually got published for some neuroscience research or something like that.

edit: My girlfriend is a Meining National Family something. They give that to people with strong leadership skills. She did a ton of extra curricular stuff in high school like starting and organizing a March of Dimes club, coaching a sport for kids, etc etc.

this 'ambassador' person called and we talked for a while - it means that they've looked at apps and stuff already probably, so they could use that info. they already browsed through to send likely letters

coaching a sport for kids...hmm...I am a JV soccer coach. does that look anything special on an app?

bluirinka--yea i know not all letters are likely letters but some are kind of obvious...bucknell's was a likely letter and it wasn't based on my PSAT scores only...i received this letter at the beginning of this month about 5 weeks after i submitted all my application materials to bucknell...the letter specifically says "on the basis of our preliminary readings, i can report that admission appears most likely for you...we cannot mail formal admission letters until late march...your letter of admission will include an invitation to our april 16 Open House."...sounds like a likely letter to me :-D

yeah absolutely. Like I said, my friend got the same one the other day. That thing about not all letters being actual likely letters was for the people who were asking whether or not the letters from Emory meant anything lol. but congrats on Bucknell!

What does the Cornell likely letter say? I'm not sure if my letter was a real acceptance or a likely letter.

they don't send them out till early march, so yours was an acceptance letter

Can't recall the exact wording of the Cornell likely letter, but words included "you should be very excited to know that you are most likely to be admitted...." etc.
