Limit of AP credit toward your major...

I think I've seen the limit as 8 hours, does this include the core classes. I am considering Chemistry as my major. I have enough credit for Chem 101 and 102, Bio 101, Math 231 and 232, and my US History covers 3 different core requirements. So out of those I could only use something like Chem 101 and Bio 101? This seems rather restricting and takes away from the rewards of actually taking an AP class. If I were to double major, could I use 8 hours for each major or still just 8 hours total?

inflagoman,

I don’t know if anyone on these boards will be able to help you too much other than maybe incoming freshman that have already been to CTOPS. These are new restrictions that will affect your class onwards. Personally, I went in my freshman year with over 50 hours of credit through AP credit and transfer classes, but I don’t think this affects me or anyone else that isn’t an incoming freshman. If you want your questions answered, I would recommend e-mailing the advising office and trying to have one of them answer your questions. Elizabeth Shuster is a really good advisor, and should be able to answer some questions.

I don’t know if they really will limit your hours that much. My guess is that you will be able to use AP credits to fulfill most of your general education requirements, and hopefully that will go over to your core classes as well. I definitely understand your concern, because Chem is a pretty demanding major, and I’m kind of surprised that UNC is doing this. One of the things that UNC has been known for is being exceptional about giving credit for AP classes and transfer classes. I’m actually taking Calc III and Differential equations at my state school right now, and I will be getting credit for them. Anyway, I hope this helps. Feel free to PM me if you have anymore questions.

yeah, this worried me a little too…
The way I understand it is that the 8hr max limit is for the courses specific to the major… it doesn’t include the basic foundations, approaches, connections, etc. courses that you can take for almost any major…I seriously doubt they would limit us to 2 courses when so many people take 4+ AP courses in highschool…

but I agree with packerfan89, you should email the advising office if you can’t wait until CTOPS to find out for sure…

The way I understand it too is that it has to do with majors and minors only.
