Linguistics or Psych?

In the fall, I'm going to be a freshman student at Moorpark College. I already have 12 units (plus 3 or 6 units from AP tests, depending on whether I pass the one I took this year)

My ultimate goal is to become a speech-language pathologist. Therefore, I assume I should major in either Linguistics or Psych at whatever UC I transfer to. I figured those majors would be appropriate because they both are used in the career I want. I know they have Linguistics and Psychology major at UCLA, and a Communicative Disorders major at CSUN, but I really don't know where else they have a major that I can use for my future career.

Psychology has a bunch of math courses and science courses I really am nervous about taking because I'm worried I won't have enough time to finish all the way up to Calculus in 2 years (which I need for UCSB/other schools) since I am taking Elementary Algebra this semester because I really am //that bad// at math. Additionally, I still haven't taken a Psych class at all (even in high school), so I'm not really sure if that is a major I really want to do.

Linguistics doesn't really say anything on the ASSIST website other than "4 semesters of a foreign language". But I took 3 years in high school, which they say fulfills the requirement on IGETC. I'm not sure if that counts at all. Is there anyone who is a Linguistics major here that knows anything else I should know?

I know it is my ultimate decision about what major I want to choose, but I do need more information about what I'm getting into since I have to build my way up in math and, if in Linguistics, foreign language. Do you guys have any information about these majors? Thanks. :)

Whoah, you’re way ahead of the game! Just the fact that you’re actively pursuing goals and coming on here and asking this question sheds light on your motivation and work ethic. Anyway, I’m going to be real with you. You’re probably going to change your major a bunch of times, and you’ll most likely change your career goals. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I changed my major/career plans…and still am altering them here and there lol.

As for the Psych major, I can definitely help ya there. I applied to UCSC, UCD, and UCLA as a psych major, and was admitted to all of them. UCSD -> Human Development (VERY similar to psych), and UCB philosophy.

I never took calc or anything like that. You only need stats for UCLA psych. I took psych stats, which imho, is SOO much easier than regular math classes. Stats is really conceptual and involves more practical and easily understandable purposes. Definitely take psych stats at Moorpark if it’s offered. I was able to use that for my IGETC math course AND my prereq for UCLA/UCD/UCSC. Otherwise, if psych stats isn’t offered, just take regular stats.

As for science, I think you really only need 1 semester of chem and 1 or 2 bio courses for psych to UCLA. I think you’ll be fine if you just think about how important those courses are to your major. You just have to keep the goal in mind, and try to keep things in perspective.

Psych is amazing at all of these schools. You really can’t go wrong. Best of luck!
