I’m seriously considering applying to transfer to Pitzer. I would like to major in linguistics, and I’ve heard they have a program for it. But I haven’t been able to find out how good it is. Does anyone know? Should I major in linguistics here, or look elsewhere?
Although Pitzer offers linguistics, the school definitely isn’t well known for its linguistics program. If you absolutely love Pitzer, you might be able to get by with the resources avaliable. If not, I would reccommend looking for schools that are known for having strong linguistics departments such as the University of Chicago. Best of luck!
This might be too late for your concern but the Linguistics program at Pitzer is actually one of the best, I would say, in the country for LACs, one of the reasons for that being the cooperation with Pomona. 90% of the linguistics classes here are actually at Pomona, and Pitzer only offers sociolinguistics classes as Carmen Fought (one of the top in socioling field). All of the profs are super great and helpful and the department has tremendous resources for all of its students. Students graduated from this program also are considered more competitive in grad school admissions (According to the department chair). If you are considering going to grad school for linguistics and like a small school setting, Pitzer/Pomona will be a really good choice for you.
I’m a ling major at Pitzer.
