yea, i lived there, and yes that is a stupid question. ;) of course you can bring females into the dorm.

how is it? to be honest, i didnt like the idea of living in an all male dorm but its better than nothing.

What kind of room did you get?

its a quadroom. no idea what that is.

all rooms are quads. one larger common room, and two smaller rooms on each side with two beds each (bunked). it's a drag that it's all male, and it wasn't terribly social. but when considering the units, you get A TON more room, for clothes, couches, whatever. If you have a window view looking over the campus, it is a fantastic view. Also, if you're a science/engineering student, you are much closer to your classes than you would be if you were in the units.

lol sounds horrible

cement walls with no cork board...can't hang anything without super-sticky putty, which than rips whatever you're hanging. Now, I'm biased because i'm a pool shark, but Bowles has the best pool table in berkeley; nearly full sized, just re-felted...they also have a ping pong table, air hockey, and foozball...but I think they got rid of the latter two.

there isnt a curfew of how late we can bring people over is there?

I've visited friends there a few times.. and it's definately less social than the units. But that doesn't mean that there aren't cool people.. I know a few people who used to live there, and they're really cool... And don't worry if you got assigned to Bowles and didn't want it.. it won't make or break your first year. My friends who lived there first year still managed to have make friends and have a good time.

dood, ur an adult, there's no curfew anywhere in berkeley. u can bring women over, u can bring MULTIPLE women over and do w/e u'd like...i've had some of the best parties in bowles, and there's rumors of a few orgies this year. bowle's ain't that bad to live in, and it's easy to make rooms smoke-proof and very social. side rooms are great for smoking pot and for hiding alcohol if you're so inclined it can be a bit chilly during the year tho. they do seem to put the most a-hole RA's there tho.

homie i hope youre not talking about all guys

^^^^ lol dood, my bad for not being clear, i meant with girls, but those are rumors.

to be honest, i aint too excited to live in this dorm.

well, that's life. get over it, you have to make your own experience.

true i just gotta make the best out what i got

ya dood, i wasn't looking forward to it either, but u just gotta deal with it and have a good time. who knows, if u join a frat, maybe u can move in there 2nd semester if ur REALLY don't like it, but it's not that bad. u get away with w/e u want, it's definitely a safer place to have a good time than the units.

is it difficult to transfer to the units?

u gotta deal with a buncha bureaucracy. it's easier to make the best of what u got. bowlesmen always go through the process of trying to get out.

Lemme give u the history (I used to be a power player in the bowles hall ass).

so bowles was built in 1928, and for years it was a pretty legit place to live. it was all guys, because it served people who were turned away from the greek system of the time, which excluded minorities and jews. so it gained a reputation for being accepting.
It was also completely student run, with students living together, having a house mother to keep order, and even having their own judiciary council to oversee punishment for breaking rules.

the place was a bit roudy, and were known for having good parties. in the 60's they apparently had great weed (although the older alumni frown upon this).

their traditions had ruffled PC feathers, and in the late 70's the university started to clamp down on the good times, and put the housing office in charge.

However, Bowlesmen weren't stupid, and the RA's and what not became justly in cahoots with the residents, and the good times persisted. The university even tried to tear down the Hall, but then alumni and bowlesmen got together to make it a national historic landmark, thwarting their efforts.

Eventually, there was such a great reputation for bowles, that it made playboy's top 10 college parties, for their annual halloween party. this incensed the university, and by 2005 they'd had enough, and then "cut the balls off" the institution by making it freshman only.

I came one or 2 years after that, where alot of the RA's seemed to be the biggest queefs in berkeley, i have a steady vendetta on one of those bastards that i still don't forgive for trying to bust me and my friends...but that's another story....

So that's where it's at today, with one alumni group, the Bowles Hall Alumni Association, trying to keep the housing office from selling the building to haas, and make it into a more student run residence hall like it should be.

The best advice now, is to just go with the flow and have fun with it while ur there, u can get away with alot.

Housing @ berkeley is a giant scheme to get your money, with tons of profit created in a rouse to get you out of the dorms without suing the school...however, it's worth it in social reasons. I wish they would lower the prices of the rent (1100 a person for a tiny, shared room, with out a private bathroom is WAYYY too much) and make it a student run and led affair where students decide punishment for infractions and what not,...but that won't happen cause there's too many uptight narcs who want a sheltered environment, and too much of a bureaucracy and employed people around the whole housing system.

run for a position in hall ass and get in touch with the bowles hall alums to try and change all this. Also, get a hold of the old song book (on wikipedia) and PM for last year's "cal toking song" and have fun with it.

how are the parties though? im a big party guy and i wouldnt enjoy it too much if it was a sausage fest.

i dont got a problem living with guys. it just wouldnt be fun without females around like the other units.
