Living in collegetown Internet

so internet is not included in my apartment next year. anyone know of what internet access (high speed) i can get?

Time Warner cable, Verizon DSL, AT&T DSL, etc.

There are a lot of choices

I’m not sure how AT&T DSL is in Ithaca, but I have it here in New Orleans and it’s not always reliable.

All of my friends had Road Runner (through Time Warner). They charge you extra for wireless service so I paid for the hard wire connection and used an Apple Airport to create my own wireless network.

You don’t really need internet. There are plenty of computer labs
and Red Rover.

lol… its convenient to have internet in apartment… can we still get Secure redrover if we are off campus? i remember on campus we had to activate it by room each year…

i’ve been living off campus, and its really inconvenient when the wireless is entirely down.

At my home I had the fastest cable Comcast offered hooked up to my home network and it was awesome. In contrast, I setup my dad’s house with AT&T DSL under the auspices that he doesn’t need something fast or expensive, well the moral in this story is you get what you pay for. I have nothing but disdain for AT&T DSL.

There is no RedRover when you live off-campus. Although you may be able to get some of the signal if you live nearby Cascadilla or Sheldon

Is Verizon DSL even an option in Ithaca? How does it compare to Time Warner? Everyone I know uses Time Warner Cable, which I’m not a fan of. We were just going to get Time Warner and use an Airport for our house this year, but if there are other options that’d be cool.

haha…yeah.

as of the beginning of last year when i set up the internet for my house, Time Warner was the only option. they suck. ugh god.

Verizon DSL is an option. I haven’t tried it before so I can’t compare them. However, I’m very satisfied with the speed that I get from the Time Warner cable.

If it helps making a decision, the internet for Red Rover (or any Campus internet) was through Time Warner Cable.
And having Time Warner off campus in an apartment felt just as fast.

i guess timewarner it is then. then dont give you a router with wireless?

Nope, they don’t.

Actually, the Internet on campus is through the University’s multiple T1 lines. The University does have Time Warner Cable for video, however.

@ Caillebotte: I had Time Warner cable for a few years and, unfortunately, it was consistently lame. :frowning: Since the service was included in the rent, I never opted for a different provider. Now that I moved to another off-campus apartment, I have Verizon DSL and it’s pretty awesome! :)

does time warner have a contract?

you mean there aren’t a lot of choices since unless you are fine with slow dsl, time warner has a monopoly, and as such provide ****y service.

i just realized. if i get my own internet, thats goodbye to dc++ in the apartment right… is there a way to access the network?

You can access dc++ when you’re on campus via redrover.
