Living On Campus as a Freshmen

Hi everyone! I have been accepted into Auburn and am looking into on campus housing. I know I want to live on campus my freshmen year, but I am not sure what buildings I should put as my top priority. I know I do not want to live in South Donahue because I want to let all the athletes have a better chance. Can anyone give me the advantages/disadvantages to each area? (Hill, Quad, Village, Cambridge) Where to most freshmen live?

My son lives in an upper quad dorm and loves it but will be moving out next fall as he starts his junior year - most kids live off campus. Good students not a party atmosphere.

The Quad dorms are in the midst if everything and great for getting anywhere. They are standard 4 person suite style dorms where 2 share a room linked by a bath to another 2 person room. My son had the choice of these or the village 4br suites where you have your own room and he preferred the Quad. The village is kind of away from everything. The Hill are older dorms but don’t have the benefit of good location.

Freshman on-campus housing is not guaranteed but is allocated, with exceptions (honors college, scholarships) based on the date of your housing deposit. Submit it now. Most freshmen will get the Hill (where S1 is happy).- same type rooms as the Quad. The Quad is most convenient. Village is newer. S. Donahue newest but pricy and furthest out. Auburn just bought Cambridge in August-ish, so don’t know much about that. Doesn’t seem to be much difference between individual dorms within each area. Doesn’t seem like Auburn is overcrowding rooms yet. Most freshmen classes are in the center of campus so the walk isn’t that bad from any of the complexes.

Submit your deposit now … you have plenty of time to go back and make changes to your requested dorm as you learn more!

I am real interested in hearing more about the Cambridge. My daughter’s potential roommate (freshman fall 2015) wants to live there and I’m wondering how it compares to the Quad in terms of general repair and also freshman experience. I’m thinking only current Cambridge residents can talk about how it is now since its management has newly been taken over by Auburn. Thanks for your help anyone!

Quad-nice rooms, cleaner than the hill, good location but very small rooms. 2 people to a room, 4 to a bathroom
Hill-Bigger rooms, quieter. Honestly people talk about how far away it is it’s not too bad, it’s closer than the village. The hill can be a bit old and icky sometimes. Grossest dorms on campus
The Village-super nice but all ou get extra is carpet and a large fridge and a living room. 4 people to a unit 2 to a bathroom. Very new and clean
south Donahue- ridiculously expensive, people will hate you for living there

Cambridge is not nicer than the quad, It is further away and seems quite dark. It also leans more on the gross side as maintenance is much better in the quad. I would go with the quad as a first year student, I live in the quad but visit friends in cambridge often

My daughter is a freshman and lives in the quad. Get your deposit in now even if you aren’t sure you will attend. List quad, village, then hills. Then go visit and search around on the fb pages and you can move it around if you want. Remember, if you find a roommate your number on the list is by the person who put in their deposit last.

The rooms are actually a nice size with big closets. She can roll out of bed 15 minutes before class and get there in plenty of time. I think it’s the best place for freshman for the convenience and being in the middle of everything. The downside is there is no cafeteria nearby, and you really don’t want to eat chic-fil-a every day. The village and hill has a cafeteria right there. She also likes the healthy eating cafeteria near donahue, but says it’s a 15 min walk so she doesn’t always feel like walking that far.

If you know anyone that wants the Moxie hutch/Shelving for over desk and bed my son needs to sell his this May. You would need to pick up after spring finals. They work in the Quad dorms for single bed and desks (probably other dorms too) Natural wood color - good shape. He’ll be in an apt in the fall and they have full size beds and different type desks. PM me if you have any interest.

I hope this is okay to do I can’t seem to find the rules when I’m looking for them - if not, please delete.

I paid my housing deposit in early December. I want to know what my chances are for getting a room in the quad. I I know it is first come first serve. I am only asking because the guy I want to room with paid a month before I did in early November. He wants the quad, and so do his parents. Did I pay early enough to get a non-honors room in the quad?

Also I should add my first three choices of building are all in the villages, and my choices by area are Villages, Quad, then S. Donahue b/c I did not want to put the hill.

Not great chances of getting the Quad. I think majority of freshmen will end up on the Hill (which less convenient but not bad).

I have three children at Auburn. All lived on campus first year and each in a different area. One lived in Village - felt as an out of state student it made it hard to meet people. Not as many freshman and doors closed leading to not as much social interaction, one in Quad who loved being able to roll out of bed 10 minutes before class yet his Quad dorm did not have many freshman so this meant not meeting people his age and the happiest one was the one that lived on the Hill where 85% freshman live. Yes, the dorms are old but once cleaned and room set up it was a nice size, lots of social interaction which is great for the less social person that might not venture out of their room in the Village and it really is not that far from classes. Auburn is not a big campus so any of the living areas are generally at most a 15 minute walk. None of my children studied in their rooms. They felt it was their living and sleeping space and did not want to also make it their studying space. They used the library to study and when it was full found the Dudly (arch) library perfect to use. Good luck!
