Local Food & Fun Suggestions

Looking for 2-3 fun walking distance places to go during our move-in experience.

Was thinking maybe Baked & Wired for a cupcake?

Where's the best local place to get a slice of pizza?

Ice cream cone/shake/smoothie?

Non-chain coffee shop?

Other yummy local spots? (Au Bon Pain is already a sure-thing - D wants to go there becuase that's where we had lunch when we visited campus last year!)

Whereever we don't make it to (move-in day being sooo busy and all...) a few of them might just be places to get gift cards to while I'm up there to send to D throughout the first semester... help her explore the surrounding area with a friend or two.

What kind of food? A place my mom and I go every time we visit DC is Old Glory Barbeque in Georgetown. They are delicious. Also, I visited a coffee shop just 4 or 5 blocks from GW and it wasn’t a chain. If I find the name, I will repost. Also, if you want the standard “burger, fries, milkshake” I really dig Good Stuff Eatery. It’s not close to GW, but near the Capitol and owned by a Top Chef finalist. Best burgers, fries, and milkshake I’ve ever had. Pizza…I don’t know. :)

thanks so much!!!
those spots sound great!

Bumping this up again –
are there any good coffee shops +/or restaurants near the Mt. Vernon campus??

Bumping this up some more haha… I’m also interested in an answer to lspf72’s question.

Yelp.com is your friend for finding coffee shops/restaurants  I’ve found a bunch of both in FB but haven’t looked at Mt Vernon area yet.

Thank you so much for the help Kulakai! Will check it out right away :)

If you are thinking of getting some gift cards, you can get her a Trader Joes gift card. It is about 5 blocks away in Georgetown. Also, Potbelly’s on campus sells gift cards too. They make good subs.

There are Cosi’s nearby too. Reminds me of Panera/Au Bon Pain.

One word of caution- the lines at the cupcake stores are very long. Be prepared to wait for it. I have never had the time or interest in waiting in line. A couple of them do deliver and I have ordered cupcakes to be sent to the dorm for special occasions (like birthdays).

If you are looking for a nice meal nearby I would recommend Founding Farmers. It is one block away from campus. Very good food and it is organic and locally grown. Not your typical organic restaurant though. You do need to make reservations as it is very popular.

thanks mom!

appreciate the cupcake warning. am not much for standing in lines.

am toying with the idea of setting up a mini-scavenger hunt around campus… with treats at each stop for her and a few friends and a clue to the next stop. hope the managers are up for it!

Baked and Wired normally doesn’t have horrible lines… but I would definitely recommend it over G-Town Cupcake which almost always has a bad line.

If you like gelato (instead of ice cream) Dolcezza in Georgetown is fantastic.

For coffee shops there really aren’t many non-chains in FB. If you just want a good real cup of coffee, then I recommend Juan Valdez which is connected to the World Bank.
