LOL at the reason I got rejected, THIS IS RIDICULOUS!

@ Cali: I very well may be seeing you at Davis, man!

Seems like many of us with high GPA’s were rejected from UCLA. I, like many of you, am appealing.

@ sandaboy: I feel for ya. I can seriously empathize. I really thought you were in, and frankly I think your reason for appeal is pretty damn strong. I wish you the best!

@ emil

thanks man…and same to you, if your GPA for psych was above the average, I’m surprised you didn’t get in as well! All the best to you with your appeal :)

@Midnight I took the Calc for engineering series at UCSD. They said they only will transfer over the Calc for Econ majors.

Oh did you take Math20A and 20B at UCSD?

I called LA and asked them about my application and they said I didn’t take a writing course. The funny thing is that I’ve taken 3 courses (core, writing 2, and the “W” from Econ 107). At first he said they didn’t transfer over as an “English and critical reading and writing course,” but I told him that I saw Econ 107 as a comparable course when I was filling in the UC Berkeley update. Also all 3 of those courses fulfill UC Reciprocity. He went away for a few minutes and then said that I was correct. I’m wondering about appealing now because he said my GPA was below the avg. admit, but that I had really great EC’s that could be a big difference maker.

I still think I would take Davis over UCLA business econ though :/

@Midnight

This whole pre-req thing is so weird. I don’t think UCLA really knows what transfers and what doesn’t, and what is equivalent and what isn’t, but instead of giving the UC-UC applicants the benefit of the doubt, they just flat out reject. Btw, how is your GPA below the avg. admit?

Unfortunately, as deserving as some of the UC-UC transfers are on this board, I don’t think UCLA is going to reverse any acceptances over this pre req issue. Appealing is definitely worth a try, but I wouldn’t expect any good news.

You did say that you wanted to go to Cal > UCLA, and I am pretty sure you will get in there because I believe they don’t have this pre-req b.s. like UCLA has. I would just wait until Thursday and see what your options are.

Sorry you didn’t get admitted. >.< You are definitely more deserving than many of the Biz Econ majors who were admitted.

My GPA is a 3.6 because of a health issue I had fall 09 quarter (right during finals time too). If I remove that quarter, I have around a 3.8 or 3.9.

I really don’t have any motivation to actually appeal over the pre-req. The admissions guy said I actually had a chance because of my ECs, but I’m just not a big fan of LA. The only aspects I like about UCLA is basically its name, prestige for business econ, and its athletics. Otherwise I’ve visited the campus a few times last year and I just don’t see myself going there.

I applied as EEP at Cal so hopefully the pre-reqs are very easy for the admissions staff to understand (calc + econ + writing). I really enjoy the atmosphere of norcal, so going to Cal would be a dream for me. I don’t expect to be in California for grad school, so I might as well cherish my undergrad here. If UCB fails, then UCD all the way :)

@Midnight

Yeah, I understand your GPA dropped that quarter. I was pretty certain though that they would ignore those few grades because I am sure you explained your reasoning thoroughly. Oh well. I’m in full agreement with you about the appeal process.

So you may end up at UCD over Cornell? For me, UCD is really the perfect environment. I’m already deciding on which classes I will take in fall quarter. I may even consider switching to Managerial Econ. I am holding out for Cal as well, but I don’t know if I would give up the opportunity to attend Davis. The decision will be easy if I am rejected as expected this coming Friday. It will be a relief to put this whole application process behind me.

Cornell isn’t really offering me FA, but I did qualify for a $5000 scholarship. However, $5000 is nothing if I’m paying 2 years worth of tuition. So I still got to decide if I want to make the investment or not, but the signs are pointing to the UC system.

I’ve been searching for fall courses as well, haha. I’m actually wondering if I should take summer courses there so I can graduate early (god I LOVE the Davis-SC articulation agreement for upper div econ courses). I’m also wondering if I should switch to Man Econ as it seems a little more practical. I still don’t think I’d pass up Cal though. Are you going to the decision day on May 7th? The agenda seems pretty boring, but I can’t say no to free parking.

@Midnight

I know what you mean about money. Since Freshman year I was planning to apply to USC, Northwestern, and NYU. When I finally compared the COA, the UCs were literally half the price, and I made the decision that I would attend any UC over these three private schools.

Just wondering, what kind of job are you looking to get after graduation? I’m still considering accounting, but since UCD doesn’t have an accounting program, I would need to complete the required classes through the UCD Extension program. Not impossible, but a little complicated.

I don’t think I’ll be able to attend decision day. I’ve seen more than enough of the campus to make my decision, but I do think that I will go to transfer orientation.

@emil

I hope to see you there! It really is a great campus.

I’m still not completely sure what kind of job I’m looking for. Most of my jobs so far are mostly econ based as they usually involve pricing, trend analysis, researching foreign markets, and etc. I really enjoy that line of work, but I’m wondering if I should try to move away from the private sector and start going in to public policy. I think one more year of econ classes might solve my questions though.

Yeah, accounting is like a myth at Davis. It’s weird as that’s the complete opposite of what we are used to at UCSC, haha. I think your opportunities with accounting should be plentiful and there are probably many ways to get those required courses if you talk with an advisor. One of my old hs friends graduated out of Davis and she’s been working at KPMG for two years, so I’m guessing she did the extension program.

Which number did you guys called to ask the reason why that you’ve been rejected? I got rejected this morning and don’t know what to do…

@sandaboy
I called before I left a post here, this number’s closed today. Thank you!

@shinnnnn

they open at 1pm and close at 4pm…try now

I just called and got through. Apparently, my overall GPA was too low for UCLA. BAH!

@sandaboy

Thank you so much!!! I got the reason thought—GPA’s not that competitive

3.28 Art History Major

Any updates? Btw, I was in the econ 25 class with Capps. Loved it. I’m also looking to transfer to UCLA, and I took econ 25 instead of MGMT 30A.

This is an update on my situation.

I was able to get the dean of UCI to write me a letter explaining that Econ 25 and MGMT 30A are the same class. I sent the letter along with my appeal and again got rejected.

To be honest, however, I am glad I didn’t get into UCLA’s Biz Econ. You might think I’m saying this because I’m butthurt, but that’s not true.

Soon after I was rejected, I was accepted as a change of major to UCI’s Business Admin Major. Considering they let only like 10 kids out of the whole school to change their major to Business Admin, I felt pretty lucky. But that’s not why I’m happy I didn’t get into UCLA’s Biz Econ.

From my experience here at UCI’s business school over the past few months, I have met some of the most amazing people interested in what I’m interested in and the best part is that I get to take courses that I am seriously interested in: like marketing, management, brand management, consumer behavior, entrepreneurship, etc.

Being in the Business Economics major for 2 years, I can say that it wasn’t for me. There was too much emphasis on things other than business (so much statistics!). On top of this, if I went to UCLA, I have no doubt that the classes would be more competitive and probably impact my GPA. Here at UCI’s business admin major, I am continuing to excel and have maintained my 3.933 GPA after my first quarter. Furthermore, since my major falls under the business school and not social sciences, the business school routinely lets us network with MBA’s and lets us attend lectures by some amazing people in the business world.

Again, these are just my thoughts, and I don’t want to discourage anyone from applying as I did. Just make sure you know what you are getting into and make sure there isn’t a better option for you.

Good Luck to Everyone that Applied this Year. Send Me a PM if you come to UCI’s Business School, I’d love to meet you! ;)

Sounds good. Who are some prominent UCI Merage alumni? And also, would you rather be at Haas or Merage?
