Anyone else in boarding school care to comment? The tenor of poss' comments are often very pessimistic. Is she right or is it just her personality, personal experiences or because of the school she attends.

It's probably a combination of all of that, emdee.....everyone colors their experiences with their own personality, but it's also very true that each school has its own character, ethos, etc. To all the young people applying this year--- don't take just one poster's opinion as fact. Work with your parents to try and find the best schools for YOU. And despite, poss' comments, not all boarding school kids are "mean." Far from it. And I believe that they tend to be LESS judgmental, not more. That's MY opinion....not a fact anymore than poss's was.

aw, this thread sounds really sad...
Dear OP, I'm sure everyone in your class feels the same way. I think you will always find judgemental people at any school you go to.... I have people who I don't want to run into as well, but it's the best thing to just ignore them. Really! Your post was written in January, but I hope you are doing better now!! :D

Well I certainly want to know how the original poster is doing, but I also want to stand up for poss791. I think it was a good reply.

Most of the threads on this forum are written by young people who have not yet attended boarding school. Many of the threads are about how awesome the schools are, how amazing everything is going to be in March when acceptances come in, how exciting the whole thing is. I like reading these threads, because they are honest and true about how those students are feeling now, 9 months before attending a new school. Posts by people who are currently actual boarding school students are really valuable because they do temper the enthusiasm level and inject some reality and they are also honest and true. I don't think people should censor their own concerns about boarding school so as not to "depress" the applicants.

I think that Poss's posts raise a lot of good points. I enjoyed my senior year the most. I started as a 10th grader and it definitely took some adjustment time. The first month or so can be difficult while you're trying to get used to new friends, new school, new system, etc. and being away from home doesn't make it easier. Boarding school isn't for everyone. Everybody will face setbacks and disappointments and they aren't purely academic. I think that it's important to go in optimistic, but acknowledge that it won't be perfect. I's a very challenging experience, but worth it in the end.

Well-said!

I'm a senior as well, and I feel a certain empathy towards what poss said. I definitely hated my school for the first two years. There was just too much pressure in the aspects of social life, regarding drinking, clothing, and talking to upperclassmen lol. I look back upon it now, and I realize they were all rly dumb, neglectful issues that couldn't mean less, but to a lonely 14 and 15 year olds, they can seem like the most important things in the world, you know?? lol... BUT I LOVE MY SCHOOL NOW. When I think about leaving it in the spring, I can't stand it!! Winters don't even seem that bad anymore, and I can't wait to go back to school this week.
