Hi, so I am late in accepting the fact that I will be going to MSU in the fall. I unfortunately missed the mt audition so I plan on auditioning next year. However, can I major this fall in Communications and if admitted to the program double major in mt and Communications?

najalynpace215, you said on another thread that you are going to Pace. What happened?? No matter where you go, please understand that it will be no advantage to you at either school that you are “already there” and both have MT programs that are very hard to get into. Other students have been very disappointed when they’ve tried to get in through the “back door” so to speak by going to the school and THEN trying to get into the program they want. You might be better off taking a year off and reauditioning next year to a variety of schools. Best of luck to you whatever you do, but I DOUBT very much that you could easily double major at MSU in MT and Communications. The MT program itself is over 90 credits, and then there are the required core courses. I would suggest a gap year to really research all these programs and figure out what you want.

I didn’t receive enough money to attend Pace. Also, I’m going to Montclair because I loved the atmosphere, affordability, and opportunities. MSU actually has a communications minor that I’m looking into and by no means am I trying to take the “back door”. I am very passionate in both mt and communications. I have spent years researching both fields. I know that it will be just as hard to get into MSU’s mt program, but I can only try my best. Thank you for your advice! I really appreciate it :)

the issue that Calliene is trying to relay to you by the term “back door” is that if you attend MSU as a non theatre major, you will not be able to take theatre classes and will not be able to work on the training and skills needed to improve your auditions to make it into the MT program. There are very few spots open in all of these MT programs for transfer students so it becomes even more competitive to be a transfer student. You should be willing to transfer in as a freshman starting over with the MT curriculum. The point here is that the regular curriculum for the Communications major will be rigorous and you will have to find some way to get trained in singing, dance and acting to prepare for the audition. If you do plan to audition for MT while attending college in a different major, make sure you allow for training in all three disciplines. Best of luck to you.

Yes, I do. I currently take singing and acting lessons. I have gotten a job to pay for dance lessons as well so no matter how slim the chances are i’m not gonna let that stop me in pursuing my desired career. I do know that there are elective and performance opportunities open to non theater majors that I plan to take part in. I have no desire to take a gap year to train because along with theater I would like to study communications as well.

To najalynpace215:

I think it’s great that you are as determined as you are, keep it up! Montclair is a great school and I think you will enjoy it! As someone said earlier…unfortunately, you will not be able to double major and be a part of the MT program! However, you will be able to minor in something else if you wish. It will be a lot of work, but if you are willing to do it, go for it! Something that I would recommend for your freshman year at least would be to get a lot of your GenEds out of the way, and on top of that you could take: Musical Theatre Dance, Acting (for non-majors), Piano (which is an MT requirement) and possibly other dance classes if you can fit them into your schedule! Go out for all of the musicals this upcoming year if you can, so the auditors will be able to see you as much as possible! I’ll be a sophomore next year and I hope to see you around! Like the other users said, keep your training up so you’re completely ready for auditions, I think there are some as early as November! Good luck!!

To SavannahSmiles:
Thank you sooo much! I:) hope to minor in Communications. Congrats on getting in the program I know it’s extremely hard. May I ask, how was your freshman yr in the mt program?

Freshman year was absolutely fantastic! I couldn’t have asked for a better year! I learned so much, and just feel so much more improved than when I first came in. The entire MT program is just a really great atmosphere completely conducive to learning. All of the professors are just so helpful and I feel like I can go to them for anything. Everyone in the program is so welcoming and the amount that this program has helped me to improve already is crazy! Montclair is an amazing program that is continually producing great talent. I think you are going to love your experience and I wish you luck for next year!

Thank you so much! You’ve been a tremendous help. I hope to see you around this fall :)

Just wondering how freshman and jr year are going? My son will be applying this fall and is debating between the MT BFA and the BA theatre studies with a MT minor.
He already loves the campus and has met some great people at open house.
The BFA is amazing and while he knows it will train him amazingly well, the BA will give him some technical theater knowledge as well.
He’s aware that the minor in MT is with different professors than those in the BFA program as well as with different students. He would love to be involved with the Players group, but knows the BFA is very rigorous. On the other hand if he goes the theater studies route he’s very aware that the chances of him being cast in one of the college run shows is pretty limiting.
The dilemma :(

TM14, not sure if your question is directed at najalynpace215, but my daughter is in the BFA MT program, and they also get some technical theater training, as I think most BFA MT programs do. My daughter right now is working tech for MSU’s fall musical. She loves the program. Having said that, I know nothing about the BA program or the MT minor. It does seem they are very separate from the MT BFA. Can he apply to both and see where the chips fall?

He will be auditioning for both and we will go from there. A typical college experience is important to him as well as being involved in student activities. I think if he got in to the MT program he’d be very happy. I think he’d be happy with the Theater Arts with the MT minor and would pay additional for applied voice all 4 years.
One program he can perform through the school and the other through the student run group, I guess time will tell.
Thank you for taking the time to answer
