Looking for more matches like Vanderbilt

I am a junior. My unweighted gpa is a 3.5 weighted 3.9. Ive taken the SAT and scored a 2300. I've taken four subject tests Math I,II, Bio E, and spanish, and Us and I've scored above a 750 in all . Looking at political science. No financial boundaries. i am in the top 15% at my highschool .it is very rigourous and we are a blue ribbon school. (according to my guidance counselor) Colleges acknowledge that my school makes it exceptionally difficult for students to succeed, and i do follow an upward trend from freshman to sophomore and the trend shoots up to junior(unw)(3.1->3.2->3.9)

Vanderbilt is not a match. For you, or for anyone.

Matches: Boston College, NYU, USC, URochester

Safeties: American(must show interest though), UMaryland, Boston U, UCSD, Rutgers, Pitt

JHU, Tufts, Emory
USC, Wesleyan (~ low reaches, like Vanderbilt)
Brandeis, Boston College, William & Mary, Colgate, NYU, Rochester, Wake Forest (matches)

If your GC says that Vanderbilt is a match, then we are not calibrated to your school and really can’t help you much.

Vanderbilt has a 14% admit rate, that alone makes it a reach, add in your (for them) low GPA and I have no idea what your GC is talking about.

Other schools: USC (reachy), Wake Forest, Emory (also reachy), Occidental, Pomona (reachy), Kenyon, Oberlin, Bowdoin, Colby, Bates all come to mind.

Remember, it’s easy for a GC to say that any school is a possibility, they have no real skin in the game. If you get rejected they can simply act shocked and bemused and mutter some worthless platitude like “I have no idea what they were thinking”. You are the one who suffers. So, unless your GC has an incriminating video of the Dean of Admissions or their last name is Vanderbilt, I strongly urge you to take their advice with a large grain of salt.

There may be a good amount of Naviance data to show that the OP’s school does well at Vandy, possibly a prep school with stringent grading criteria.

OP, what other schools has your GC recommended? Maybe that will give us some ideas.

Doesn’t a match, by definition, mean that one is very much like most of the other students at a school? If OP’s stats and background are similar to the majority of students at Vanderbilt, then it’s a match. The fact that the admissions percentage is low doesn’t change that. Lots of people don’t get admitted to some of their match schools. Doesn’t mean they weren’t a match. That said, anyone (especially a top student) needs to understand that just because they are a match doesn’t mean they will get in.

My schools gpa is out of 6, and mine is a 5.2. Saying that Vanderbilt averages acceptance for REGULAR decision is. 5/6. She said that I should look at possibly northeastern,if I’m willing to go to California for Berkeley then she said i might as well look at ucla. Umass Amherst at the moment is my only safety. More matches were like bc, Rochester,Georgia tech, etc

If you like the vibe of Vanderbilt you would probably like University of Virginia, Boston College, Wake Forest, Lehigh, University of Southern California, and Colgate.

Vanderbilt may be a match for this student, but certainly not a lock due to low % admitted. USC is a safer bet.

Vandy does love its high SATnumbers though. Think vandy perhaps a low reach/high match (maybe 30 to 40% ). If Vandy is your #1 choice, apply ED and that may bump you up to 50%. Also, if UCB is Berkeley and you are OOS, then I think UCB is more of a match than Vandy given their desire for full tuition OOS students.

Other matches for you (50% or above): Carnegie Mellon, USC, Michigan, UCLA, BC

Some low reaches (30% or so) to think about if you like Vandy: Davidson, Rice, and WUSTL (show lots of interest)

What are your parents willing to pay? You said 3/4 on another thread. Does that mean they can pony up $45K/year?

What is it that you like about Vanderbilt?

University of Tulsa isn’t in your geographic preference, but is a lovely school that you would probably match well with.

Yeah they can pay full but they want to pay 3/4 so I work and cornell is my number one choice, but Vanderbilt is my third choice. I like the location and I mean I just like it not sure why but it’s a good school. Thanks mugsdogs06 that actually really helps.-

anymore???
