I'm considering transferring to another school if I can't get into CSE or Informatics in the fall.
I know CSE is super super super competitive and hard to get into but how about Informatics? Is it just as hard to get into? Sucks that they only admit students into the major once a year...

Same here… I have 4.0 in 142, 3.9 in 143 and got denied for accelerated and one regular admission. My paper was not that bad either, so it’s probably my chemistry grade which I think is absurd for determining admission. I’m taking Phys next quarter so hopefully that’ll improve my chance of getting in over summer.

Would love to hear more on informatics as well!

Anyone know the acceptance rate for the informatics program? I’ve been interested in it because it involves CSE and not much mathematics… I’m currently trying out some business classes… would it be a bad idea to have informatics as a back up?

sumzup - thank you! I’m definetly not giving up my dream to major in CS! My grades are decent, not spectacular but I think they’re ok. Thank you for the suggestion I’ve decided to put my java programming skills to good use and create some android apps to showcase my interest and abilities to the department. Hopefully it will impress admissions? If not, I’m going to transfer to another university to pursue CS elsewhere.

xzstarszx - wow, your grades are awesome! I’m surprised you didn’t get in when you got invited to apply for accelerated admission?? Did you take 142 and 143 at UW? Congrats on becoming a TA! Sounds fun, and I’m sure you will definetly get into the department next fall with your high grades and TAing position! Good luck!

ilikeUW - I have a friend with a friend who’s in informatics…and from what I’ve been told, Informatics does not really include much programming. (BOOO!!)…I’d rather transfer to another university to learn CS than switch majors to Informatics… I actually wanna study algorithms and data structures and all that good stuff.

alice, the ACMS program at UW has a subprogram call Discrete math and algorithms that might interest you. The CS program here is just extremely competitive it’s scary. I’m also hoping to get in finally over the summer!

The CS program is DEFINITELY competitive here… But honestly, a CS degree from this school is just so valuable. The few people I know that graduated from here with CS degrees had job offerings before their senior year was over paying in the $100k range. Ridiculous…
