I went to the store today and left my purse somewhere and someone stole it and took the money out and turned the purse in. I had $100 in there. I am an idiot. I feel really really upset. Anyone have similar stories of woe to cheer me up? Please no lectures, I know how stupid I am.

Cancel your credit cards, etc. immediately. They could have ripped the numbers off of them and then turned it back in to you so you wouldn't cancel everything.

My sympathies. I feel bad after losing one dollar, so you must feel terrible.

I did something stupid too. I was checking out in a store in the mall once & put my wallet back in my purse, only I wasn't looking or paying attention and so apparently I missed my purse entirely and my wallet landed on the ground. I didn't notice until I went digging for my car keys about 30 minutes later. I ran back to where I checked out, it wasn't there. I went to mall security who told me I should just go home and start reporting my credit cards as stolen.
I was driving back when my cell phone rings - it was the guy who found my wallet. I had a phone number in my wallet for one of my aunt's. He had called the number, and they gave him my number. I met up with him at his work (Pizza Hut) and got my wallet back. I lucked out - he didn't take my cash or use my credit cards. But he should have turned it in to mall security!

My roommate was at a party last weekend with some not-so-upstanding people. My roomie isn't much of a drinker and doesn't do drugs at all, but some of the people there had some stuff. Anyway, it was at her friend's house and she left her purse in the friend's bedroom on the desk. At one point during the night, she went to the bedroom and found her purse on the floor. She didn't look in it, she just picked it up and put it back on the desk.

When she came back to the dorm a few hours later, she was freaking out because she thought someone had stolen her wallet. She lucked out a couple of hours later when her friend found the wallet left in her car after a 7-11 run. Moral of the story: don't ever take a whole wallet or purse to a college party with drinking and other stuff going on. Only take a few bucks to get yourself in the party if you need it and your ID. Latch your keys to a belt loop.

There was also this other time when my sister went out to eat with some friends. It was late when she came home. She got in the house and found that her wallet was gone. She went back to the resturant and called her friend to see if it was in his car. It wasn't in either place. She looked all over but couldn't find it. The next day my dad found it in our driveway. My sister is a bit on the flighty side when it comes to stuff like this, and it isn't the first time it's happened. But it serves as a good reminder to make sure you have your wallets and phones with you when you leave places, and always have purses zipped and snapped shut (that's what the zippers and buttons are for).

Personally, I have gone shopping and left bags from one store in other stores. Luckily, there aren't too many people that wear the exact same style and size that I do.

^Good advice. Thanks for posting. I always check that I have all my stuff when I leave buildings. It's so easy to lose something with all the moving around you do in college.

This is the reason I hate carrying cash, but sometimes it's just necessary.

I'd just like to point out that the person who took your money probably didn't turn the purse in. The people who steal the money always take it and leave it somewhere (like in the trash). The person who turned it in was probably just trying to do you a favor so you didn't have to buy a new purse or get new id's and such.

I lost quite a bit of money due to some bad luck.

I had to pay ~$20 for a long distance plan that I never signed up for. Well, actually, you're automatically enrolled unless you opt out of the plan, but I was not asked that question when I applied for residence in person. Before I moved out, I went home for a week. When I returned to move my stuff to a new residence, I forgot to bring my keys, so I had to pay $50 for a lock change. I was working on campus that term, with no pay, so I lost quite a bit of money.

On a trip home from Canada, I guess I left my wallet at a rest stop on a counter in a store, b/c when I got back to school I didn't have it. I canceled all the credit cards and stuff. Was kinda a pain. And obviously had some stuff that I'll now never get back (aside from the money). Had to go get a new license... luckily I had my passport since I was in Canada, so I could get a new license, otherwise, I woulda been SOL for awhile.

Another time I was flying back to school from a weekend in San Antonio, and I left the airport, had my wallet in my lap when I went through the booth to pay. Then I got back to my dorm and didn't have my wallet. I had to call the room to get let inside, b/c you need your ID card. I borrowed a roommate's ID to go back outside and look for it, with a flash light (it was like midnight). Found nothing. Called the parents, decided to wait till the next day to cancel credit cards. Called the airport lost and found, maybe I dropped it at the booth, no luck. Went back out the next morning and found it. It fell between the passenger seat and the door. Still no idea how it got there, I guess what happened was I put it on the passenger seat after I went through the parking booth, instead of back in my pocket.

lost bout $200 in my wallet at a park gone :(

In middle school, I went out to pizza with my family one time, and I left my purse there. I realized about 15 minutes later that it wasn't with me, but when we went back to get it, the $20 I had was gone. And in middle school, that's a whole lot of money.

For a wallet story:

My brother went to the park to play some frisbee, and lost his wallet there when he got home...6 Am the next day, and old man knocks on the door and gives my bro back the wallet and just says, "I don't want any money, I just want you to promise to do the same for others."
Good man.

For my own cell phone story:

My high school is crap. A lot of gangster wanna-be kids...anyway...my cell phone managed to fall out of my pocket while i was walking across the grassy courtyard. After my dentist appointment was over, I realized that I didn't have my phone. I called my phone from my house, one kid picked up and was about to give the phone back, but then this stupid loud mouth girl was like "hell na foo u aint gettin dis phone bak". I was pretty ****ed, never got it back. I feel your pain though...i was really upset about it at the time..anyway...my brother wanted to call them and threaten them but unfortunately they never picked up =(

^ dude that sucks (the cell phone story!) i hope that girl gets what she deserves, what a female dog. urgh.

I once left my whole entire purse on a walmart shopping cart. I got back home and realized i was missing something. I was like "O CRAKSFDJL!" so I drove back there (only like 5 minutes away) and it was still on the shopping cart. Thank GOD

O yeah btw I have a message in my wallet - "if you want the money, just take the money leave the card and so on. It's hard to live in this world without a single identification. Or better yet, leave the money too, I'm only a poor college student :/"

^Nice. /fghfdg/

lost 900 playing poker.. this all in 1 month. i dont work either.

do you feel better?

"Back in the stone age," actually it was early 90's, we did not have cell phones,"gasp" we had beepers instead. Oh, the joy of pulling off the freeway to find a payphone! I made a call, and left my wallet on top of it, with $700 in it, ugh, the rent money. I returned within 5 minutes to find it gone! Thank you OP for reminding me of this blunder!

consider it a $100 lesson.

honestly its not a bad price considering that is all you lost.

i mean in the future you could lose 10X more than that but we all know it won't happen because of the lesson...

GA2012MOM, that's awful! :(
