Louisiana admissions

Have heard rumors that Louisiana students are guaranteed admission if they have certain stats.

However, I have met many outstanding local students who were not admitted to Tulane. Now, I did not feel comfortable grilling them on their stats -- it's like asking somebody how much they weigh -- but they were no slouches, ie, good grades, good ECs, good test scores.

Since Tulane now has an acceptance rate on par with Harvard, in the single digits, wonder if they are dispensing with the Louisiana "guarantee".

Hello my friend. Single digit admissions rate? Where did you hear that? Last year it was something like 26%, which is very competitive but nothing like Harvard.

As far as Louisiana residents and admissions go, this is what is on the Tulane web site:

This was found at [Tulane Admission: Louisiana Applicants](http://admission.tulane.edu/apply/louisiana.php)

However, another Google link I found did not read the same in the Google summary as the site itself, and I have found occassionally that Tulane misses updating some pages on the site. So I cannot be sure that this policy is still in place. Here was the Google search result:

yet when you go to that page you only see Louisiana resident scholarship opportunities

[Tulane Admission: For Louisiana Residents](http://admission.tulane.edu/aid/louisiana.php)

Admittedly that is an “aid” URL and I might not completely understand how Google picks up on those summaries, but I sure don’t see it anywhere on the page. Bottom line, it would take a call to admissions to see if the Louisiana policy is still in place, unless someone on CC has first hand knowledge. My guess is that it is still the policy. 3.5 unweighted GPA is no cakewalk for many students.

Heard the single digit admission rate from an alum who is currently employed at Tulane.

Been at many school events with Louisiana parents whose children were not accepted at Tulane.

Thank you so much for your link. I’m betting this 3.5 unweighted GPA is what’s killing our smart kids. Son attends a very competitive high school where top students have great weighted GPAs, but are getting turned down on scholarships, honors programs, by schools who look at unweighted GPA.

On a happier note, good friends at neighboring, less competitive high schools are being accepted to Tulane and have even received the 22K scholarship. Hope they take advantage of the excellent educational opportunity they have in their own backyard.

Well, if the single digit admission turns out to be true, it would be a huge shocker. Only a very few schools have that, like Harvard, Yale, a few others. I just think there had to be a misunderstanding there, but we will see.

I suspect the stringent requirements are so that Tulane can satisfy the state legislature that it does serve Louisiana residents with a bias, but also so that they don’t drag down the averages as Tulane tries to move up in stature. Certainly students with good GPA’s that may not quite meet that criteria will still get accepted by Tulane, just like a student from anywhere else. But you are right, they won’t automatically qualify for the top programs and awards. Then again, Tulane has always used unweighted GPA as far as I know.
