Low GPA / High SAT - Chance This!

GPA: 3.6 I started out poorly in freshman year, trend has been upwards. Taking 4 AP classes senior year, expect to do well (I hope!).

SAT: 2340
ACT: 33

AP Scores: USH 5 Eng 5 Latin 4 Physics 5

What are my chances at these schools?
UChicago
UPenn
Carnegie Mellon
NYU
Duke
Wash STL

I think you have a good chance at all of them except UPenn and UChicago. I’m not an expert at this at all, but you have a very good SAT score. If your GPA is weak only because of freshman year, and you’ve taken many APs in your later years, it really shows that you’re getting your act together, and I’m sure it’d make a great subject for a college essay too

Based on your grades and scores I would say you’re in at CM and NYU. If you have substantial/dedicated EC’s than I’d say you have a good shot at most places but it may be harder for you at Duke and UPenn.

Penn takes about 2% that were not top 10% in their class. That includes all athletes, legacies, staff kids, URMs and the otherwise hooked.

We would need to know where a 3.6 falls rank wise at your school (oficially or not) to give a reading. Rank is the most important factor in college admissions, eespecially at highly competitive schools.

I agree with superflyingllama. But I think you’ve got a good chance at CM/NYU and I think you have a better chance at UPenn than askjeeves may think if you have good EC’s and recs.

Thanks for all the feedback, I actually feel a lot better now. I just joined CC and was blown away by how great everyone’s stats are. I thought for sure I was out of consideration for some of the better colleges with my GPA.
My school doesn’t rank, but I would guess top 25%. I am first generation to college and have lots of community service.

Tran & Superfly: I don’t want to attempt to chance you back since I really wouldn’t be able to give you any kind of knowledgeable feedback. Thanks for your input, it’s much appreciated!

I wish you the absolute best of luck! :)

Can you afford CMU and NYU? Both are bad with aid.

I would definitely need some aid. If I am not accepted or able to qualify for these colleges financially, what would you suggest as fall back schools?

Do you qualify for need based aid or need merit aid?

I thinkk you would have a decent shot at CMU and NYU but i would not expect much aid.

This is a tough one, your rank will make most schools that meet need hard. I’d look through the merit aid threads on the FA board for schools that weigh scores heavily for merit aid. Alabama and Auburn come to mind. Your state schools will probably need to be your safeties. Where are you from?
