Low GPA, high SAT, do I have any shot at some of these schools?

Hey all I was wondering if I could get chanced for some schools... my biggest problem is my really low GPA. Some stats:

state: CA
School: good public HS
GPA: 9th-11th = 3.2 UW, 10th - 11th = 3.0 UW, 10th - 11th = ~3.3 W? (UC weighted?), higher for 9th - 11th... senior year 1st semester will improve this GPA a good amt (doesn't matter for UCs though)
SAT: 2200, reading: 740, math: 770, writing: 690

Good ECs, good essays, good recs... biggest problem is the super low GPA. The thing is regarding my recs, the classes I did well in the teachers really liked me and will give me good recs... the problem is that there are some classes I did really badly in (lower than Bs) =/. Here are some schools I was thinking about applying to... what do you all think? I think I have some safeties, matches, and reaches. Chances for...

UC SD
UC Davis
UC Irvine
UC SB
UC SC
Boston University
Tufts
Portland
U Chicago
U Michigan
USC

Thanks!

i’m not sure about the UCs, but BU is a possibility, as is Michigan. Not sure about the others. have you checked out naviance?

Yes I have checked naviance but there isn’t complete data on there. The reason I’m applying to Tufts and UChicago is because they are supposed to be more holistic schools and I have good recs/ECs, etc… thought I might as well give it a shot.

The irony about my grades is that my 9th/12th are/will be the highest (and quite a bit higher)… the two years that don’t matter as much as 10th/11th. My courseload was significantly more difficult in 10th/11th though (12th is difficult but not as difficult as those 2 years).

I don’t see you getting into BU or Tufts, frankly.Tufts is more likely to admit someone with high grades and lower SATs.“I’m not a good test-taker” is a better excuse for selective colleges.Unless you have a significant hook, I wouldn’t set my heart on those.

BU is a reach, but I think you should just get strong mid-year grades. If you show an upwards slope it would be better.

UC SD- Reach
UC Davis- Reach/ Match
UC Irvine- Reach/ Match
UC SB- Reach/ Match
UC SC- Match
Boston University- Match
U Chicago- Reach
U Michigan- Reach
USC- Reach

I think you have a very good shot at SC. Davis and Irvine maybe. Hope that helped. =)

Yes I know, Tufts is definitely a reach.

I thought I would have a better chance at BU… their average SAT is around 1200-1250, mine is ~300 points higher than that. Their GPA is 3.5… is this unweighted or weighted? If you count in my freshman and senior year 1st semester, my unweighted GPA would be ~3.3, weighted maybe 3.6? (school doesn’t weigh GPA though but I took lots of AP/honors). That doesn’t seem too far from BU’s average GPA…

Thanks TheLegend

BU seems like the type of place that’s always trying to move up in rankings. I think you’re in there since your SATs, which is a number they can publish, are so good.
