Low GPA, okay SAT is there any hope?

I realize this is super vague but I don’t want to post any information that is too personal cus a lot of people I know browse CC. I have a 3.4 UW GPA and 2150 SAT, I am 87% emotionally prepared for rejection. I have a lot of of extenuating circumstances related to that GPA but I do realize its still incredibly low.

My extracurriculars show depth and leadership, my essays definitely shed some light onto the GPA with out being mopey. My AP scores are all 5s and 4s which isn’t reflected in my grades.

Is there any chance I get in ED2?

P.S I should mention I go to an extremely competitive public school (top 100 in the country) which sucks really bad but what can you do?

P.P.S Also I did an interview with a senior and it was either the best interview ever or mediocre, I can’t really gauge it. We just sort of talked about CMC for an hour it was fun and then I got the interviewers number and we texted about CMC some more.

P.P.P.S I realize without knowing any specifics you cant really say whether I will get accepted, I was more thinking along the lines “is getting in” within the realm of possibility or not?

yes!!! I just got in ED1 with a similar gpa after junior year (i think i’ve gotten more Bs than As in high school) and a 33 superscore for ACT. I never in a million years thought I would get in but don’t give up hope - I think CMC truly looks at the applicant as a whole and values students both inside and outside the classroom. good luck!!

@collegeobsessed8 I hope you’re happy, now I’m only 73% prepared for rejection. Thanks! did you do a video for your application?

The quick answer: highly unlikely but not impossible. I would say more than 95% of applicants with your credentials do not get in. But that means that 5% do. You have to hope that someone on the admissions committee sees something that makes you stand out in the crowd. If not, then you truly have no chance.

@84stag Yea I understand my chances are still extremely slim, hopefully someone likes me on the admission committee I guess.

@secretlyAdog I got rejected from CMC ED1 with very similar stats. I had extremely unique extracurriculars with national leadership positions on national executive councils and published research. They also told me I had strong essays. They said the reason I was denied was because of my GPA which was a 3.4. I don’t know to which extent that’s true, but you have to be extremely qualified and I had an all AP schedule also. I’m not saying you won’t get in, but you would have to have a substancial hook to up your odds a lot. Recruited athletics is a plus. I loved CMC man. I had talked to a student intern in admissions for 2 years, had a professor write a letter to admissions for me, talked to an admission rep for 6 months, did an overnight visit, visited over the summer, interviewed, and sent a video prompt in. It is a tough school to get into man.

@JHUSoccer I’m sorry it didn’t work out dude, I’ve already had a taste of rejection so I know what its like. The eloquent ways schools can say “we don’t want you” doesn’t do much to ease the pain. However I’ve also seen how good it feels to get into a school (hint: it feels awesome). With all your ECs I’m sure you’ll get into a college you’ll be happy and excel at. Good luck!

@secretlyAdog Thanks for the support man. It’s all really random and anything could happen. It really is luck. I will all the best for you man for CMC.

Yes I did do the video - not really sure why anyone wouldn’t

@collegeobsessed8 I didn’t and got in. School work kept me too busy. I don’t think video is necessary if you did do an interview, but it is a plus. If you didn’t get to do an interview, then the video is your only way to show a bit of your personality.

P.S See you there! Make sure you update the Class of 2016 College Acceptances thread in the High School Life Forum.

@JHUSoccer Well I’m screwed.

I did not do the video but I did an on-campus interview. At my interview, I asked my interviewer if I should send the video and she said I did not have to since I already interviewed. The intention of the video is mainly for people who did not get the chance to interview.

@secretlyAdog - So you got in to ND with a 3.4 and 2150 SAT? If you were rejected at CMC forget Pomona - 10X as hard to get in.

@yalebound2020 LMAO are you stalking me? I’m actually ranked in the top 15% as I recently found out from my counselor so its not as bad as I thought. And the fact you think Pomona is 10X as hard as CMC shows your ignorance. From my school CMC has taken kids with lower stats and rejected people with higher stats who got into Pomona. You need to seriously get a life.

@secretlyAdog - We are all ignorant in some way. Pomona is 10X as hard to get in regardless of what you want to believe. Very familiar with the Claremont Colleges. Again 3.4 and 2150 doesn’t get you into ND. Stalking could be used as a euphemism to unmasking a lie? You went into a rampage against ND / Catholic Church with no clear proof that you were admitted EA.

I applied ED to Pomona (deferred) and RD to CMC, and I have a family member currently at CMC. The above bickering is quite childish.

There will be kids who get into both schools, accepted CMC and rejected Pomona, rejected CMC and accepted Pomona, and denied at both.

Pomona is not 10X harder to gain admissions than CMC, but Pomona is probably more difficult. The admit rates are similar. However, Pomona applicants are generally stronger in terms of academics. The schools also value different criteria; Pomona seems to care more about research, whereas CMC values leadership (and perhaps extracurricular involvement) a tad bit more. An acceptance from either school is very impressive.

Pomona is harder to get into than CMC but both are highly selective. They seek different profiles though: Pomona wants intellectual kids, who are excited about learning, are likely to go into research; their cross admits would probably include Carleton, Swarthmore, UChicago, W&M. CMC wants driven kids, who aren’t shy about the work hard/play hard ethos of the college, and measure success in financial terms. Their cross admits may include Penn, Stern, Dartmouth.

Admissions decisions will be available on March 22 at 5PM Pacific.

Pretty mean to put the subject of the email “Admission Decisions Available at 5:00 p.m. PST,” which makes everyone click on the email frantically, only to find that it’s not today, but rather about 10 days.

not sure if you got in or not original poster but if got in with a 3.3 gpa and 2200 sat then there’s hope for you. But I did have a significant upward grade trend( like from a 2.8 to 4.8 kind of trend), extenuating circumstances, and a solid rest of my application so that helped me too. (also I’m African American and I’m pretty sure admissions office made an effort to recruit more minority students this year after the whole dean resigning scandal)
