Hello all,
I’m a pre-med finishing up with my freshman year (Neuroscience major). Overall I did decently well, getting all A’s and A-'s in all subjects for my freshman year. However, for this 1 credit Biology 1 Lab, I got a really low grade (a C-). Its so low that I am going to have to retake the class next year. It really stands out and looks bad on my transcript and when I retake the class, hopefully it will replace my current grade for my GPA however the old grade still shows up on my transcript.
What does this mean for my chances for med school? I’ve already heard many people say that “as other grades are good you should be fine” however how important is Bio Lab 1, and while I’m sure this one grade wont completely ruin my chances for med school, what does this grade mean for top 20 med schools who are much more highly selective?
It doesn’t matter if your school allows for grade replacement. All college grades must be reported (even DE taken in hs) on a med school application and get calculated into your med school GPAs. Assuming you have an overall strong application, your C- in a one unit course should not have much impact on your chances. I would point out that all US med schools are good schools and can serve as platform to whatever area of medicine you might be interested in, so consider applying broadly. Good luck
