Is it just me or did the scores for AP US come in really low this year. I thought I was going to get a 4/5 and I got 4. But the straight A’s students at my school are receiving lower than thought scores.

Of straight A’s students scores I know of so far.
5’s: One
4’s: Four
3’s Three

It’s possible that the top students were too confident with their scores in the class that they did not study for the actual test.

It is also possible that the curve was harsher this year. APUSH is the most taken AP test, and with more students taking the test, there will be more 5s and 4s. This could negatively impair the leniency of the curve. However I think the increasing number of students who take AP tests balances out (i.e. more students, more 5s , 4s, 3s, 2s, and 1s so that there isn’t much of a fluctuation in average scores).

I’ve also heard that the FR section on APUSH is graded very harshly, with the average for each essay being 3/9. Therefore, it is reasonable to conclude that the top students in the class just did poorly, without using a hard test/harsh curve excuse.

I thought the multiple choice portion on this year’s test was harder than normal, but it was made up for by the unusually easy DBQ/FRQs I thought. Maybe some people in your class just got unlucky, but I think overall there will be the same percentage of 5s, 4s, etc as usual.

For the Free-Response, DBQ topic was really unexpected, but it was still feasible for me to get a good score on. For Part B and Part C, I was lucky to obtain those topics since I was knowledgeable in the topics of the American Revolution and suburbanization and immigration. As a result, I achieved a successful 5.

probably scores at your school were lower since your particular teacher/textbook didn’t cover the areas that ended up being on the exam as thoroughly as some other areas. It’s impossible for overall AP scores in any subject to be “lower than normal” since raw scores are statistically curved to yield a similar number of 5’s 4’s etc each year

Well I dont think that an A in a class guarentees a high score on the exam…having that A may just require doing a ton of busy work, but the high score requires an understanding of the information. (Not saying that A’s dont take hard work… just throwing that out there)

For the APUSH exam this year, i think the DBQ took alot of people by suprise. (It definetly did for me, haha I didnt know too much about that time period before the Revolution)

And the bellcurve is a comparasion against other students, so there shouldn’t be too many suprises for the scores… :

When I read the DBQ question I was like ‘Oh this isn’t bad’. But when I perused the documents I totally freaked out and froze. Yup, pretty sure I got a 1 on the DBQ.

we did the crucible in my english class and i just ranted about how “the mass hysteria that existed in the community, which was driven by religion, lead the all international connections and societal functions into a cattywampus witch hunt” I was happy i got to use that word because i learned it that morning. but yeah i think i did horrible on it.

I remember opening up the essay packet and wanting to cry when I read that the DBQ was on Puritans.

I don’t think the people at my school generally do well on any AP exam. I’m expecting that less than half in my class passed, but I’m certainly hoping that there’s more. I think the top 5-8 people in our class passed, though I don’t know how many got higher than a 3. I’m fairly positive I was the only 5. (I honestly know that I owe this to CC, I wouldn’t have studied nearly as hard if I didn’t find this place )

Most of the people on CC (according the APUSH score report) got 5s, though.

The grade distribution for this year’s exam has not been released yet. I would expect to see it soon however and will post the numbers when available.

Ohh… I’m getting scared. I haven’t received my scores yet, so I don’t know how I did, but I pretty much completely skipped one FRQ (only had a thesis). I’m not sure how I did on the other FRQ; at least it was finished. I actually got the DBQ finished, which is good, although I’m pretty sure I misinterpreted the question. I am so bad at timed writing. Hopefully I did better at the MC. Aah… Oh well; I guess we’ll see…
