Lowish GPA, good SAT

I'm applying to CAS undecided (though I was going to pick social sciences), but I think I will probably be rejected.

My GPA is 4.2/6.0 (not weighted... but not exactly unweighted... my school has a weird GPA system. Honors and AP are worth the same)

My SAT is 2060: 690CR 670M 700W
SAT II: US History 700 Bio 650

My ECs aren't bad, and most of them are unique (no sports though)
My Recs are good too, and I think my GC's rec helps explain my GPA (ADD issues).

NYU isn't my top choice school, but it's up there. Should I give up hope?

no, my sister had a 3.2/5.0, with a 1980 on the SAT

NYU was a huuuuge reach for her (5% reach according to the counselor), my parents told her to take it off her list, but she decided she wanted to give it a shot the day before the app was due

here she is now, NYU '13

dont give up, its worth a shot! you never know whatll happen :)

can you convert your gpa to a 4.0 scale? or out of 100?
i had a low gpa as well, 3.4/4, 2130 sat’s
but I wrote great essays which I think helped a lot. Spend a lot of time on them, make your essays stand out and you have a good shot

If you were to directly convert my GPA to the 4.0 scale it would be 2.8, but that’s lower than it actually is because of my school’s weird system. It might be around 3.2 with an upward trend (My grades this year have been pretty good). Without freshman year it’s higher.

@xmaster: what did you sister apply for? Which school?

@xmaster

I agree with you, that we should never give up hope and apply and keep our fingers crossed, but your sister did get lucky. Although I don’t think her chances of getting in were 5%, they weren’t very high and her stats are below par at NYU. She must’ve had something else that stood out. Did she apply to tisch? or did she end up at LSP?

@OP
Yes apply, it’s worth it cause you’d never know until you get that letter but don’t keep hopes too high. if one person with lower stats gets in, that does not mean you’re safe. I’ve seen people with much higher stats than me get rejected, while I got in. NYU looks at the whole package, EC’s, Essay’s and class difficulty matters a lot. Yes your gpa is low but apply anyways

Can we see a bigger picture? I’d hate to have to say whether or not you’d get in just because of two factors- but as of now with your GPA/test scores I’d say NYU is a reach for you.

i had like a 3.2 (with a really good trend though) and a 2270 and got into CAS…

2060 isn’t exactly a 2270 tho… nor is 2.8ish a 3.2 sorry to say

It’s not actually a 2.8 because of my school’s GPA system, it’s closer to 3.2 with an upward trend.

I was considering taking the SAT again, although my current score seems to be fine for NYU, but I suppose it should be higher to make up for my GPA. I wonder if they will accept January scores which I wouldn’t be able to send until February…

That said, I think short answers are pretty good. I’ve tried to be honest but also unique.
