LSA Honors

@wrenwu If I remember correctly from what I heard from a counselor, its usually all the same…

What time does this come out? I applied to the 2nd round, so it’s supposed to be out tomorrow? Does anyone know what time? Thanks.

Decisions out - my daughter just texted me. Accepted OOS.

I got deferred- 1500 SAT, 3.7ish unweighted OOS.

Deferred - 36 ACT; 4.76 GPA weighted; OOS :((

Wow. @Penguins0823 that is surprising!

I have heard a lot of deferral too. That was not the case from 4 years ago. I remember most of the students admitted in my area were accepted into LSA Honors even in the first round.

Does anybody know if you got deferred in February, do you get another email for each round of admissions?

@AS2YPZ From what I remember during my time you don’t. I got deferred in February and heard back with a decision in april.

@billcsho Is your information anecdotal? Or does Michigan release information on how many students apply to Honors each year, how many are denied, deferred or admitted? Sounds like it changes a lot from year to year.

@wrenwu Not sure about the reason. They do have the number of LSA Honors applicants and the number admitted at the end on their website. They do not disclose the deferral info but whoever not admitted was denied. The percentage of EA in total admission has been decreased significantly in recent years. So there are less admitted students by the time of the first 2 rounds of Honors application deadline this year than several years ago who may apply for the LSA Honors.

@billcsho I wonder if the information on their website is up-to-date? Seems to me they are the same stats as when my son was applying to college 4 years ago. I can’t imagine those numbers have stayed the same. I would think that the number of students applying to Honors would have gone up??

As the number of admission has been very consistent at around 15000, I don’t see why there will be any significant change in the number of LSA Honors application.

@billcsho I’m not questioning the number of ADMITTED students to Honors (I understand that number probably has to stay the same due to logistics), but I have a hard time believing that the number who actually APPLY has not gone up significantly. Really - out of 15,000 admitted only 1900 would apply?

Again, why would that number go up significantly as there are almost the same number of admitted students (to UMich not honors) may apply each year? It is not like the number of application to UMich that increased drastically over the years.

I am in the program now and after hearing about the admissions process from the director I can say that they really value the essay over anything else. Since they only evaluate students who have already been accepted to Michigan, they don’t really care much for scores because they know you are smart enough to go to school here, but they are concerned with your intellectual passion/curiosity so that’s why they evaluate the essay most strongly.

@billcsho In the 2010-2011 admissions cycle, 39,570 applied for admission. Last year almost 60,000 applications were received. I would consider that an increase.

@wrenwu Again, that is the total number applied to UMich, not the number admitted to LSA and became eligible to apply to LSA honors. The latter has little change even from 2010. The fresmen class is bigger while the yield rate is higher too. So the admission number is still around 14000-15000.

Thank you for your patience @billcsho - I know that you are the expert in all things Michigan, but my original thought/question was really just based on my observations - Since I went to Michigan (a million years ago; and was in Honors) it seems to me, the applicants nowadays are are much more ambitious than when I went - and more likely to go the extra step to be in Honors. Very few kids from my high school even knew about Honors when I went and now (at least anecdotally) it seems that everyone from my daughter’s high school with a certain caliber of stats wanted to apply…

@wrenwu There are a small increase in LSA honors applicant, but is just not in the scale or percentage of increase in application of admission to UMich. The quality of students have been going up and I am sure that may contribute to an increase in numbers of students applying to the honors program. Nevertheless, that increase would not be drastic but may be visible if you can compare the data from today and from 6-7 years as ago.
