With the recent posting of Webguy Photo Gallery 14, and the full compliment of the July 6 meatball luncheon pix, I took some notes when blowing thru them looking for freindly faces (no luck). At meals they appear to tuck (read: hide) thier color coded squardon lanyards inside of thier BDU’s, making it tough to spot a particular squadron table (and thus those particular photos us parents will want/need to look at harder). Occasionally I spotted the hint of a squad color in a photo and knowing it might help some of you spot S or D (especially if you have a slow computer and can’t look thru 100% of them) I thought I’d post my lanyard findings within Gallery 14.

The numbering below goes along with these July 06 photos (and the color lanyard spotted) and knowing that Webguy seems to shoot entire tables, make sure to look at the photos before and after the # I have listed as a starting point…

05 and 15 Purple
35 A Squad flag / Teal
63 H Squad flag / Yellow and up thru 110
134 and 145 Purple
159 Orange (though no others - anyone else spot orange/ squad B?)
162, 175, and 191 appear to be bright blue or purple
215 and 229 Teal again
254 and 284 Purple
302 up thru 340 Red
364 a number of Grey
369 Blue?
415 thru 430 Grey

Now some questions for Hornetguy and Duckie, etc. In many (most) of these photos the cadet’s eyes are closed. At first I thought they were praying, or maybe sleeping, but now think they’re being told to close them for the photos. Thoughts?

Also, do the cadets sit at the same tables (with the same other cadets) all thru BCT-1? And who get’s the end spot (a cadre?).

Hope this helps some of you spot your group easier.

That's exactly what I thought too! I asked my husband USAFA class of 84)about it. He said that the basics have to eat at attention. Therefore they are almost closing their eyes to see their food.

........But I know that MY Basic was just praying :) Wishfull thinking?

I also know from D that they have to keep their eyes on the eagle at top of plate at all times. I did finally see a picture of D at the tables . She will die when she gets to see herself . Her mouth was full of food . Ha Ha !!! I loved it !!!

They are trying to look at the eagle on their plates. To give an idea, I had to look below the frame of my BCG's in order to see it.

Ah ha. Makes sense. Must hurt to look down for that long too.

Thanks!

Do you just have to try to eat looking at the eagle during BASIC or is it the same until recognitition ?

It's usually just during Basic that they're at strict attention. During the school year they stand at attention until the Wing Staff announces, "Wing at ease" and that's when people pray. Then they say, "Wing take seats." At that point most upperclassmen just lets them eat "at ease" (not rigid upright but still not allowed to talk) or some just say eat "at rest" where they can eat and converse like a normal human being. I have on a rare occasion seen some tables eat at attention all year long. But you rotate constantly so it's not like you're always stuck with the jerks.

The upperclassmen sit at the same table all year long. In basic, BCs will rotate every meal to different tables. During the Ac Year, they rotate every week. It's just so everyone can get to know each other better and experience the relaxed and the uptight cadets.

Sorry if this is confusing, LoL.

I'm just wondering why several at several of the tables, the cadets had their napkins in thier shirts. Was it because one of the cadets possibly spilled something? :)

You're probably right on the money on that one. Either someone spilled or it's an italian meal (spaghetti, meatballs, etc.) where someone ALWAYS spills tomato sauce on their uniform. It's kind of unavoidable in Basic when you can't see your food and you have to guide the utensils to your mouth by sixth sense. Ahh the good times =)

Thanks to her dad's eagle eyes, Gallery 14 page 12 photos 411 and 412 (and others before/after) have been identified as Barbarian D Flight personal since Potterfan1989 (Sara) and my son MikeKnight2011 (Mike from NJ) are shown marching in this formation. Sara's the short lady in photo 411 in the back row w/glasses and Mike's in # 412's front row, second in with glasses. They're also appearing in Webguys "Armory" photos today (hallway shot getting breifed on rifle issues). Thanks again to Sara's dad Dave for spotting 'em!

lol, staring at the eagle. I suppose it is deceiving. I really don't think the cadre care about the photographers. Last year they were just walking around and no one would pay attention.

Bomber pilots! Aka, those that spill on themselves. I know many of us were constantly spilling cereal milk at breakfast!

I was THE bomber pilot of my flight in 2nd BCT (just before Jack's)!...not a title I particularly wanted.

Remember folks, starch your uniform (and potatoes have lots of starch, lol).

And, just for fun, Hornet, Ramius or others: what's the phrase that a Basic has to say when they drop their napkin? Something like "May I make a low flying pass...." I can't remember the rest!

It was a little bit different for everyone, but let's see if I can remember it:

Basic: "Sir, may I make a high speed, low altitude pass and return to altitude?"

Cadre: "Yes you may. Everyone else...give him cover fire!!!"

Basic gets napkin while everyone else points fingers around and makes shooting noises.

My squad was a little more ordinary, but much less USAFA-ish.

"Sir, may I make an extraneous movement?"

Cadre: "what do you need to do?"

"Sir, the answer is pick up my napkin."

Cadre: "yes"
