I am entering high school in the fall and am wondering which class I should take.

What are MAC 1140, MAC 1114, and what math have you already taken?

MAC 1140 is Precalculus Algebra and MAC 1114 is Trigonometry.
I have taken Algebra I and II and Geometry.

Every school has different systems and names for classes. Can you post syllabi for these classes so we can see what’s covered in those classes?

My school has no syllabi, so I copied and pasted from the Course Description Book

PRECALCULUS (Grades 10 – 12) 1202340
Study of trigonometric and circular functions and their applications. Topics include trigonometric
identities, graphs of trigonometric functions, inverses, equations and solutions of triangles. Stresses
relationships among topics of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry and uses these relationships in
preparation for calculus. Topics include graphs, curve sketching, vectors, the conic sections, including
translation and rotation of axes, equations and graphs of curves on polar form, analytic proofs, and
parametric equations.
Prerequisite: Algebra II Honors
Credit: 1.0 Two Semesters
Weighted: Y
Bright Futures: C
SUS Admission: C
MAC 1140 DUAL ENROLLMENT PRECALCULUS ALGEBRA (Grades 9-12)
Topics include the study of the following functions:
Polynomial, rational, radical, absolute value, exponential and logarithmic. An emphasis will be placed on
solving applications by mathematical modeling. Other topics include matrices, systems of equations and
inequalities and conic sections.
Prerequisite: Algebra II Honors and an ACT math score of 23+ or an SAT math score of 560+ or a College Level
Math (CLM) score of 51+ on the College Placement Test (CPT) given at Z College by
appointment (X Test Center or Y Test Center).
Credit: 1.0 One Semester
Weighted: Y
MAC 1114 DUAL ENROLLMENT TRIGONOMETRY (Grades 9-12)
Topics include the study of trigonometric functions and applications, analytic trigonometry, vectors,
trigonometric form of complex numbers, parametric equations and polar coordinates and equations.
Prerequisite: Algebra II Honors and an ACT math score of 23+ or an SAT math score of 560+ or a College Level
Math (CLM) score of 51+ on the College Placement Test (CPT) given at Z College by
appointment (X Campus Test Center or Y Test Center).
Credit: 1.0 One Semester
Weighted: Y

MAC 1140 looks a lot like a standard Alg II course, which you have already taken. Trig (MAC 1114) is very useful if you decide to enter physics or engineering related fields, and is used widely in calculus. If you don’t know trig very well, you may want to take MAC 1114, or pre-calculus honors.
