Because of the faculty i got into, I'll be living and taking classes in the Macdonald campus during my freshman year. If all goes well however, I'll move to the faculty of science and continue my studies at the downtown campus. But i have a few concerns...
a) How different is the macdonald campus from the downtown campus? I read that it's in a more rural setting, but exactly how rural? The hustle and bustle of city life is one of the things that attracted me to McGill... am i going to completely miss out on that while i'm at the macdonald campus?

b) Assuming that i successfully transfer to the faculty of science my second year, I'll be living off campus right? How hard will it be to make friends and network? I keep on hearing that it's the first year that everyone makes friends because they're all living on campus. So i guess my question is, how screwed am i in terms of meeting people if I do move to the downtown campus?

c) For those who know the Macdonald campus, how do you guys like it? How far is it from downtown? Will I need a car to get around places while living in the Macdonald campus? And any other comments that anyone would like to share would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not too familiar with MacDonald campus (ok, not at all, aside fromt he fact that it is somewhat far and unfortunately not close to the metro, making transit to any place interesting somewhat long). But I can tell you that you don't need to live on campus to make friends. In fact, financially speaking, it's much better to live off campus (and away from the McGill ghetto). Remember, most students actually live off campus, and most U1's (assuming that's what you'll be if/when you transfer) are actually new students looking to make friends just like you.

the macdonald campus is COMPLETELY different from downtown. at first, i really liked the campus because it was so peaceful and beautiful (right next to a lake, fresh air, etc). but after a few weeks it got pretty boring. there's basically nothing to do on campus except go to the gym or study. of course, you can always take the shuttle downtown but i personally hate taking the shuttle because each ride takes at least half an hour (and that's on a good day). also, there's a bus to a nearby provigo every tuesday so you don't really need a car.
i don't think networking is a big problem as long as you get involved in clubs and activities downtown.
some good points to make you feel better about going: cheap rent, easy classes
