I don't know what they're called, but I get letters from colleges that include information about their school and a website with a username and password if I would like more information. I started getting them least year after I checked that I would like to receive information from colleges on the PLAN. The mail was usually from schools I didn't know, so I pitched them. But I recently got a few from universities I'm interested in such as Duke, Caltech, UPenn, and UChicago.

Do these letters from top schools mean anything? I know that this does not mean that the colleges are pursuing me or anything, but are they at least taking some interest? Would, say, a C student have just as much chance of getting information about a school like Duke as me?

It doesn’t mean anything unless they send you information about possible summer courses. Although they are not personally extending the invitation to you, you may want to think about going to one of these enrichment courses.

They spam pretty much everyone they can get their hands on. If you take the PSAT and give them an address, or if you sign up on a college-related Internet website, you’ll be bombarded with paper.

I’ve been getting a lot of those, too, mate. While it doesn’t mean they’re LOOKING at you, it does mean that looking at THEM isn’t outside of your academic range. Think of it as a good way to tell which colleges would consider you.
