I'm trying to write my main essay for the Common App, and I wrote it on my current view + anecdotes of Germany. However, as I was reading the book "Acing the College Application" by Michele Hernandez, it said that the SUPPLEMENTAL essay is the place to talk about something you really like. This confused me a little and now I'm not sure whether the essay I wrote should be more main or supplemental. Is there a difference on what kind of a characteristic/tone of the main vs. the supplement essay should have? Thank you! :)

I can not tell you if one is right from the other, But, it would make a great deal of sense to write about your self on the main essay and answer the questions on the sup essay…
me - LOVE astronomy so…
Main essay- how I was once called “stupid-failure-incapable of learning” and how the love for astronomy helped me become noting short of a mathematical genius! And how I can draw 4D objects without a metrics system, blah blah blah…
Sup essay on the other hand- what I plan to achieve in astronomy how I will use the program… How I balance religion and astronomy… What I discovered, Projects I have going ETC…
So in summery- I used the main to relate astronomy and my personal life. I used my sup to Show my objective, work, and plans in astronomy…

Are you guys talking about the supplemental essay requested by the individual college? Or is there a space for an extra essay on the Common App? Sorry if I should already know this… just starting to look at the Common App…

^^^ we are talking supplemental essay requested by the individual college. Unless you feel like committing you know what… I would start my essays… I am applying to Princeton for Eg… It requires Common app essay + Supplemental essay + Summer work essay +/- Engineering essay. Another example is UChicago— Common app + Sup, Why U of C + What is nice about you? + one of 6 essay questions.
I have/ had to write 15 essays completely different from one another and 21 in total!! and I am only applying to 8 schools!!

Did something change with the common app? I thought the supplementals were school specific.

Edit: Ah, nothing changed then. I would put your cover-all essay with anecdotes of germany as your primary, because that’s the one you’re most confident in and general. Tailor the supplementals to the school and question.

Oh sorry! I probably wasn’t specific enough. For some schools, the supplemental is simply to share more about yourself. I believe this is true with Harvard. But thanks for the replies!
