Maintaining GPA/Passing for Spring

Hello all,
I TAGGED into Davis and applied to Berkeley. I am currently taking 4 classes that are major pre-reqs. Davis requires that I get at least a C in all 4 classes and Berkeley requires that I get at least a B in all my classes. I am doing well in 3/4 classes but I do not think I will pass Organic Chemistry 2 and will probably have to drop it. I got an A in the first Organic Chemistry and I currently have a 4.0 GPA, but my Dad was having medical problems when the semester started and passed away recently. I missed several days of classes and although I was able to catch up on all my classes except for Organic, my mind is not 100% on school. My major for Davis is Chemical Engineering and my major for Berkeley is Chemical/Nuclear Engineering. Organic Chemistry is not required for Berkeley based on assist.org, but I don’t want to drop it not knowing if I get accepted. Not only that, but the deadline at my school to drop is before our decision deadline of April 24. How strict are the UC’s on satisfying the Spring requirements? I am worried that if I drop/fail Organic chem then I will lose my TAG at Davis and also not get accepted at Berkeley. Please, I would greatly appreciate your advice.

I’m in the same boat with you but I ended up actually dropping my required Physics class and stayed another year. My condolences for your loss and I wish you the best in what happens. Reading around and asking it seems that as long as you complete the class you make it in… but if you can’t find an answer here I suggest calling admissions directly at the school office.

Are you sure berkeley is saying B in ALL your classes or just major requisite courses? As O Chen is not a requirement, per se, you should call dept and ask specifically before you drop it.

Maybe emailing is better because you will have the response in writing, in case you later need to appeal.

I’m sorry about your dad. Be sure to mention that in the email.

So I took the risk and ended up dropping OCHEM before the drop deadline. Thankfully, I got accepted into UC Berkeley College of Chemistry. But the OCHEM is still showing on my conditions as a class that I need to pass with a “B” or higher, even though it is not required on assist.org. And on top of that I am so close to getting a “C” in my math class at which the conditions also require that I get a “B” or higher. I am so worried and I am preparing myself mentally to be rescinded.

Email your admission counselor. I’m expecting a C in one of my physics classes so I emailed him to ask if my admission would be rescinded before I submit my SIR. They may have the math class available in the summer if you need to retake it.

Yes you need to get something squared away with Cal. I think it will be ok as ochem is not required. And really try to get a B- in the other math class. I can’t say for sure what will happen as these are both math classes. But more often then not they are forgiving, and like poster above said, the upshot might be they’ll want you to take ochem in summer, but unlikely.
Don’t wait. They will always work with you.

Thanks for your responses. I emailed Mr. Quincy Jones this morning and hopefully will hear some good news in the next couple of days. I am so close in this math class. All that is left is the Final Exam which is 3 weeks away. I am just really worried about the OCHEM since we are not technically accepted into our major, but rather the college. Is it common for transfer students to end up with a different major within that college than what we applied for?

We’ve been waiting for a response from Quincy jones for days.

Just got an email back from Mr. Jones today. He said since these are core science & math courses he would have to forward my information to the College of Chemistry committee for them to decide on how to move forward.

Oh man, sounds pretty scary…

Well, their sending to the dept is pretty standard. I’m not up there re-reading the thread. Did your dropping the class make you ineligible for Davis?

Anyhow, stay strong! Really work on the math grade!!

Just wanted to give an update to close out this thread. The College of Chemistry agreed to revise my conditions and remove the Organic Chemistry class as a requirement. They also allowed for me to get a “C” in Differential Equations, although I ended up getting a “B” in it after studying my butt off and getting a 100% on the Final Exam! As far as Organic Chemistry, I am glad they removed it as a condition since I was only taking it because it was required for UC Davis and not for Cal. Well, its been rough waiting for their response but I would like to thank you all for your replies and opinions. Go Bears!

Congrats @lavoisier21 !

Congrats @lavoisier21!! My daughter will be at Cal too. Not in chemistry.
