My D isapplying to Cal Poly for fall 09. She is interested in eventually becoming a vet but is torn between applying as an animal science major under the ag sciences dept or the bio dept under the dept of math and science. If she went in under animal sci how hard would it be to change if she decided to change her major. I know Cal Poly frowns upon major switching especially between departments.

While I don't know a lot about switching majors, I am friends with a girl who was in the same situation. She has wanted to be a vet since the age of 6, so she did a lot of research before applying to Cal Poly as a biology major. I can't comfortably give you details about why but I think it was because of either less classes required for completion of the major, or more classes that would be crucial to a pre-vet student.

I think she plans on going to UC Davis for vet school after Poly, so she's pretty serious about it. If you'd like more info, I can talk to her and find out exactly why she thinks bio is better than animal science. It may take a couple days, is that okay?

By the way, changing majors is something that you really want to avoid at all costs! But if she really decides that she wants to make a switch, it is do-able. As long as you're not switching to architecture or some engineering majors, she should have a good chance. You have to get your college advisor to sign off on it and all this stuff. So if there's any way that she can make a solid decision before sending her application, this would be best.

I had to leave calpoly because they would not let me switch majors.
if you are undecided at all, i just wouldnt recommend cal poly. they are very strict and unforgiving, not good for the undecided freshman.
a school like uc davis or anywhere for that matter would give a better chance to explore to 2 years before having to commit.

polygrl, why did they not let you switch majors/what did you try to switch to? i'm an incoming freshmen and i kind of already know that i want to switch from social science to business, specifically accounting. i know its hard and i know the classes i need to take (and if be, i'll take summer school to catch up)

It's not difficult to change majors if you have a really good GPA in your current major and as long as its not Business, Engineering, and Architecture. What you should be worried about is graduating in a reasonable amount of time since some classes taken toward one major do not help with another major.

Ah, shoot.. I'm kind of nervous/unsure at the moment since I wanted to switch into business from social studies. I knew that Architecture and Engineering were impacted, but I didn't know that business was as well? Is it still possible, do you think? I know I can still go and figure it out and if it doesn't work well, I'll just get my GE's done, take summer courses in business maybe at a community college, and transfer out, but that's the last thing I want to happen to me.

You should contact the business department to know for sure. I know Arch and Engineering are hard to transfer into. If you have a high GPA in the classes listed here it will increase your chances.

Yeah, I've looked at that. I won't be taking Math 221 until 2nd semester & Stat 251 until 3rd, though. I just have to talk to the adviser[s] about ECON 221/222 because if I go in the business direction, I'd take that but if they don't let me, I'd have to take political economy for Social Science. Then, I don't know when I can add in the BUS 214 class, unless I can't take it since I'm not in business. If anything, I can take that in summer school at a community, I think. I'm just afraid of what they'll say or think because it seems like I wouldn't be able to switch into the business major until my sophomore year.

thank you everyone! jjsoa1 what I am gathering is that since there is some overlap between the two majors, animal sci and bio, if she decides she wants to change it would be OK and doable? Is there a website that lists the classes you would have to take to do that the way there is for those transferring into the business school?

polygirl I am sorry that happened. May I ask what you were wanting to switch from and into? Thanks!

My son is in the exact same situation as your D. He has always wanted to be a vet and has worked at a vets office for over a year now. The vets he works with strongly suggest a bio degree. So, he will be trying to switch as well! He is taking the Animal Science 101 and 112 classes his first semester. We were worried that if he decided against being a vet, what will an animal science degree get him...can probably do a lot more with a bio degree. Let's keep in touch to see how they are both doing! 2 1/2 more weeks till they leave :( :)

CalPolyMom your son sound like a male version of my daughter! Will you keep us posted on this thread as my D thinks she wants Animal Sci, but I have been told bio is a better choice. She isn't too keen on listening to me and I don't want to nag but if your S keeps you posted and you keep me posted well anyway, she is applying for the fall of 09 and it would be very nice to learn ahead of time which major is better for vet hopefuls. Thanks so much and good luck with drop off etc.

HistoryMom, our son was the same way - we kept telling him Bio would probably be a wiser choice, but it took someone else telling him that for him to think about it! I'm curious to see if he does switch, if he'll have time to take some of the animal science courses to help him and allow him to still work with animals. I'm sure he would still join the vet club. I will keep you posted on his progress. Where do you guys live? We are in Orange County, CA.

CalPolyMom: Please let us know how your s is enjoying his Animal Science classes. and yes, it would be so very helpful if you let us know how hard the major change proves to be. Thanks!

I will definately keep you all updated. Just dealing with leaving him yesterday - hardest thing I have EVER done in my life. He did actually call me last night (and I didn't ask him to!). He is currently immersed in WOW Week and having fun.

HM...no, he is our first (D is a h.s. sophmore). Luckily, she keeps us very busy with club and hs soccer! My husband can't understand why he can't just make a quick 2 minute call one time during the day. He says with cell phones, it's not like it used to be...he can call us wherever he is, just to say hi. H says it would help both of us so much if we got that quick call, so we know what his day is like. I did not call, email or text S at all yesterday and I will tell you, it was HARD! Didn't hear from him, but know he was busy with WOW activities...hasn't been on facebook for 21 hours (that's one way to gauge how busy he is!!).

Is everyone else having as hard a time as me? Cried off and on all day yesterday - boo hoo. Today seems to be a bit better.

Well, once our S started classes, he has decided to stay with Animal Science major. He says he knows for sure he wants to be a vet and he will get into vet school! It does worry his Dad and I because you never know what can happen or come up to change your plans. But I keep telling myself to be thankful that he has a clear direction of what he wants to do with his life. He's now telling us he MUST have a car the rest of the year as the ag area is a 3 mile hike and the sheep area, where he is planning on doing a sheep "enterprise" next quarter is over 3 miles from the dorms. All the sophmores told him he really needs a car. Told him that's what he has a bike for, and to make a friend in his major that has a car!

As far as how his classes are, he's a boy - he doesn't tell us much. I'll try to find out when I finally get to see his face in a week...I miss him terribly! He is absolutely loving college life in SLO...don't think he gets enough sleep, but has made a ton of friends.

I'll keep you posted if anything new happens!
