Hello everyone. I currently attend UCLA and I'm at that point where I simply cannot choose between two majors, those majors being Global Studies and Econ. Global Studies seems to suit more of my personal interests, but I feel like it would be hard to get a job with that major. I'm interested in Economics, but it doesn't suit me as much as Global Studies -- but I think I will have a better chance getting a job with that major. I don't know, this has been bugging me for a while now but I don't know what to do and I don't want to linger on knowing that I'm still unsure as to what I want to major in.
What do you think? Please help.

You’re exactly right. It is very, very difficult to land any type of job with a degree in “Global Studies.” Virtually every “xxx Studies” degree is seen as an easy (read: useless) major by employers in most fields. Furthermore, you shouldn’t be afraid to sacrifice some of your interests for employment given the deplorable state of the college job market.

Here’s my suggestion: do your primary major in econ and do a 2nd major in International Development. These majors have a good amount of overlap so it shouldn’t be too difficult to complete both of them. In addition, “International Development” is more recognizable than “Global Studies” and will make you more competitive when you apply for jobs. If you’re really not that interested in econ however, you might want to major in business econ instead. One of my friends at UCLA says that business econ is fairly easy even if you’re not that interested in the subject material.

What about Political Science? You look at the economics of global economies, and see how politics influences decision making. You don’t seem so interested in the math part (economics major), and global studies just sounds useless. Look into polisci and see if there are careers that interest you.

^ International Studies seems closer to Global Studies than Political Science. Furthermore, the OP should probably major in business econ instead of econ if he/she doesn’t like math.

You’re probably right. I’ve never heard of either, and didn’t bother to look up International Studies. I was just trying to think of an alternative to look in to. Nevertheless, good luck to the OP.

How difficult is it to switch into Global Studies?
