I only have one that i took in middle school. I plan to take one in the summer of 11th grade (before 12th starts) at BCC as a dual enrollment course. Will that count as my 2nd sequential foreign language course?
And will that course count as my 2nd sequential outside the state of florida?

If the course you took in middle school was for high school credit and the BCC course is in the same language but a higher level, then you’ll probably be ok.

But if you are taking a first semester language course at BCC, then you’ll need to take a second semester of the same language to meet the requirement.

yes the course i took was for high school credit, it shows up on my transcript. And yes it is the same language at the 2nd level…and just to be safe i am taking the 3rd level in 12th grade to make sure this sequential thing is down

Unless you pass a test saying you have proficiency in the language, I don’t think it will count. I had two consecutive years of both French and Spanish in high school, but it doesn’t count.

Ok, I think I may be confused about what you’re asking.

It counts towards getting accepted into UF, but the language credits won’t be able to transfer and count as your UF language credits that you’ll have to earn while at the university. If all you need is to get into UF, then make sure you take two years of language, like you said you’re doing.

I think the OP was asking about foreign lang req to apply to UF. If you took spanish 1 in middle school and then spanish 2 as DE, then I guess it would count. Why dont you just take spanish 2 at you school?

If I were you I would go see my high school guidance counselor asap and get a game plan put together on how to nail down the 2 yr minimum foreign language requirement. Too, even though your transcript might show a years credit from 8th grade for foreign language, some out of state colleges might not accept the work. I took algebra and spanish in 8th grade and my high school initially gave me credit for the courses but later on my school didn’t and scratched them off my high school transcript. Try to get the language stuff cleared up now before it is too late and you end up having to really hustle meeting language requirement. Good luck.

Just curious … has anyone been accepted to UF in the Fall with only the required 2 years? All the Freshman that I know starting this fall have had at least 3 years of a language.

I was a fall admit. Everyone, except two, from my high school that year did the minimum. I spent my time focusing on classes I thought were more interesting and I’m not a fan of learning foreign languages.

K another question…If i were only to have one foreign language credit…and i did my 2nd (spanish 2) in 12th grade…Would it still count as the 2nd consecutive?
I’m worrying that it wouldn’t because when you apply, you are still in the middle of taking Spanish 2…and if i have block scheduling Spanish 2 could be in the second half of the year so i technically wouldn’t have 2 foreign language credits when i apply in november of 2010.

Basically, if i have Spanish 1, is it safe to take Spanish 2 in 12th grade no matter when the class is? As long as i have two consecutive by the end of highschool right?

I think the requirement is to finish all the required reqs before matriculation, so spanish 2 in 12th grade would be fine. But I would clarify with your school adviser since different schools have different schedules and the way they handle credits.

WynGator- I only took 2 years of foreign language and will be starting in the fall. I think it’s only a piece of the package, as long as you have other outstanding credentials.
